Yes this thread isn't so much bass-specific, I apologize.

I'm looking for a peg shaper that I've heard rumors about but have never seen. It's supposedly simliar to the Herdim Rotex peg shaper but has more adjustment options. (different tapers, wider range of peg width, etc)

It uses a cylindrical cutter on a planetary gear system much like an old-fashioned pencil sharpener.

Has anyone seen such a device? I've exhausted google looking for it.

make your own... it is easy. if you are going to shape a peg, you also must have a matching reamer, I recently got an inquiry about the one I made for truing up my peg leg end pins. if there were enough interest in having cello size ( for Laborie style ) pins I can see about a run on my cnc, but they are easy to make. you only need about 2 inches of taper 17 to 1 I think, I think a knife from an electric hand plane would provide enough edge, fillet the corner at the opening .

drill a block for a cello end pin reamer a 16mm / 5/8" drill will open it enough then ream it to open to about 19mm at the top. cut the block tangent to the reamed hole and affix the blade so it will shave the pin you are tapering.

Thanks Rick, I'll use your method to make a jig to cut peg bushing dowels.

However, I'm turned on to the idea of using the cylindrical cutters to reduce the number of cheap ebony pegs that get ruined by tearout with the standard planing shavers. This system is supposed to cut a perfect peg every time even from craptastic ebony..
