People in elevators...

So last night I had a steakhouse gig, downtown. Gotta look nice, coat and tie. Upright bass.

I park in a multi-story parking garage and make the trek with my upright to the elevator. Get on. Forty-something couple is already in the elevator.

Lady looks at me.

"You playin' somewhere tonight?"

Duh.

"Is that a cello?"

"No, it's a bass."

"Like a bass guitar?"

"No, like THE bass. Where the word comes from."

Confused look from her. End of conversation as I leap from the elevator.

Damn, some people really are stupid.

"Where the word comes from"???
That's funny!

I would said something like:

- Yeah like a bass guitar, but this is accoustic-bigger... same kind of thing..by the way my band and I are playing at.... we would love to see you around , come to see us you can have a wonderful time while enjoying great music.

Did you notice that you posted this in a BASS GUITAR forum?

The correct answer is "Oh no, just transporting a corpse in the bag."

We have a winner. A successful musician (or anybody who's job relies on an audience) should know how to turn something like this into an opportunity. Maybe the couple was heading the same place you were, and they walked out when they saw you playing. Or maybe 5 minutes later they got a call from a friend that their plans had to be cancelled and now the couple needs something to do that night.

You come off as sounding like a jerk. That lady may have been interested in hearing you play. Maybe she even was at the place you were playing and saw you and walked out.
You had the perfect opportunity to talk about your music but you chose to be an @$$ clown. Boo for you. :scowl::rollno:

Ignorance of a topic isn't stupidity. I'm a drummer and I'm not going to think someone is an idiot if they don't know the difference between a "ride" cymbal and a "crash cymbal" or a rack tom vs. a floor tom.

I saw a string orchestra the other night and didn't know the difference between a violin and viola, so I looked it up, but I don't consider myself an idiot, just uneducated in that area.

I dont understand why its so hard to politely explain something to somebody who has an interest in what you are doing. If they are friendly I don't care how ignorant the question is I will try to quickly explain without boring them. I carry my bass in an SKB case so they dont know exactly whats in there.

If they are rude I tell them its a rifle.
