People in elevators...

Back to people in elevators...In the university library, stepped into the elevator to go to the top floor. One other persons joins me, not a bad looking girl. Thing is, when we step in and the doors close, the lights turn off. So it's me and this girl, both going to the top floor of the library, standing in the pitch dark. :help:
It was possibly the most awkward moment I've had in a while. When she commented on the darkness I remained silent, just for the effect. The tension in the air could have been sliced with a tension cutter. The look on her face as we stepped out of elevator was one fraught with confusion/amusement. Despite the implicit possibility of making a new, rather hot acquaintance, I think it was worth the loss! :smug:

That's kind of creepy...

Once, I had a doctor's appointment before a rehearsal. I wasn't going to leave my upright bass in the car, so I brought it with me to the doc's office. Unfortunately the bass and I rode the elevator alone, so no story there. However, in the doc's office, another patient sees me with the bass. "Bass not feeling well?" he asks. "Yeah," I reply, "She's been feeling little out of tune lately." Tee-hee.

I would said something like:

- Yeah like a bass guitar, but this is accoustic-bigger... same kind of thing..by the way my band and I are playing at.... we would love to see you around , come to see us you can have a wonderful time while enjoying great music.

This.

Nothing like wasting an opportunity to pick up a couple of fans and choosing to be an ass hat instead.

The lights go off & you're stuck in an elevator with a girl. That's all you can think of doing?

You could be typing a much better story if something else happened. You might even be submitting it to a certain "genre" of magazine.

I know, but in my defence I didn't have much time to think, plus I'd rather not have her screaming to the authorities about it! :ninja:
Thinking about it now there are hundreds of such things I could have done...oh well, I'm sure the opportunity will present itself again! Hopefully it won't be the last time I'm with a girl in the dark...:smug:

Well, to be honest, I think I'd rather be an ass hat.

If two people wearing flip-flops and cutoff shorts are coming into a gig where the norm is fine evening dress, and the steaks are a hundred bucks, I'll be okay if I piss them off and they don't show up. I don't want them to be there because of me; that makes me and the establishment look bad.

FWIW, I'm just starting a new gig as an Air Force musician, so I don't think I'll be in the "steakhouse" much unless I want to be.

I swear to God, some of you must not play out much, because I hear the 'cello' thing like once a week and it gets old quick.

Ass hat out.

If this is your MO, so be it. Life's too short to make other people's decisions but your own. However, you're going to lose a lot of business that way. I'd hate to see how you'd react in more important business situations.

By the way, if those two people in cutoff shorts each bought steaks, that's $200. That's $200 more the restaurant makes on that night, and it's going to look good on you. Are you a house band? Maybe those people love the steakhouse and bring a party of 8 one night for a birthday party and everybody spends $150 and steak and drinks. If you happen to be the house band and are playing that night, that extra money won't go unnoticed. Now of course, they could've been asshats and yelled at the musicians and started fights and scared off customers -- but the point is, you never know, and until that point, anybody who's got money in their pocket is your best friend if you're looking to get paid.

You missed the point by focusing on one small detail. The big picture is that you made some strangers feel bad in a situation where you could have made them feel good. So we are all ganging up on you to make you feel bad to show you that it's better to treat people well.

Make sense?

Still cracking up about your " steakhouse " gig. I think with your flair for public relations that the steakhouse is right where you belong. I didn't know Golden Corral had live music ...

Zing!

How dare thine has not heard of Sir William Kelley and his traveling Acoustic Bass....beacuse a 16oz PorterHouse taste like sh!t without Sir Will playin' in the background

Do your thang!!

Whenever possible, I break wind in elevators. :hiding:

Seriously though, I've been faced with similar conversations in elevators when accompanied by my bass. I find the best solution is to be personable and answer their questions without any sarcasm or snark. I've met some pretty cool people who just like to have something to talk about. Most of them couldn't tell the difference between a bass and a guitar, but who cares. The few that do know the difference nearly always have some interesting experience to share. Most people are pretty cool when given a chance.

OP - you gotta remember that the people who have no clue what you do are YOUR CLIENTS (or at least potential fans). They hired you or go to your shows or download your mp3s because they can't do it themselves. You know music, they don't. I doubt a surgeon cares if you know the difference between a curved crile and a retractor. Why should you? It's not your area of expertise.

I walked into a bar for set up with my bass bag slung over my shoulder. The hostess (I'm thinkin she was a natural blonde) holds the door open for me to let me in. I thanked her, and asked her where the band was supposed to set up. She kind of looked at me for an uncomfortable minute and said "Oh, are you with the band?"

Were you wearing your sausage costume we've seen recently in TBOT?
