People in elevators...

So last night I had a steakhouse gig, downtown. Gotta look nice, coat and tie. Upright bass.

I park in a multi-story parking garage and make the trek with my upright to the elevator. Get on. Forty-something couple is already in the elevator.

Lady looks at me.

"You playin' somewhere tonight?"

Duh.

"Is that a cello?"

"No, it's a bass."

"Like a bass guitar?"

"No, like THE bass. Where the word comes from."

Confused look from her. End of conversation as I leap from the elevator.

Damn, some people really are stupid.

.

see, I like having fun w/ people. . .I would have responded "Nah, just taking my bass out for a walk." :D

I used to own a smoothie shop years ago. Our banana supplier bailed on us and I needed a lot of bananas quick. so I went to a local market and got the lot. On line a lady asked me if I liked bananas much - to which I responded "Nah, it's for my pet gorilla - he can't get enough of 'em" :D . . . . GASP!

nothing wrong w/ a little fun ;)

You sound like a really fun dude to be around.

While rehearsing a play some years ago, the director and I went to a Burger King to pick up lunch for 20-25 people. The director put in the order.

Cashier: "Is that to go?"

Director: Nah. Give me a fork."

:D
Back on topic, I think you were a little harsh. At least you had a conversation. In my experience, it´s usually 30 seconds of silence followed by "Bit chilly, huh?", the doors opening, and everyone running away from that pathetic excuse for a conversation.

She's obviously not had any exposure to orchestral instruments before. Or perhaps your upright bass was a smaller 5/8 size and that threw her off? LOL

Any how, it would have been a good opportunity to help her with her lack of knowledge. Why should she know that this is bass rather than a cello? It's not information a person is born with. Someone has to teach this to you - you could have been her teacher...

"Yes, they do look slightly similar but a bass is larger than a cello and can play lower notes."... something along those lines.

All said constructively bro. Not trying to pile on.

+1, I've had to explain the difference between a double bass and a cello to a lot of people - oddly enough most of them calling themselves music nerds. It gets frustrating after a while saying "no, this isn't a cello, cello's are about half this size.".

I walked into a bar for set up with my bass bag slung over my shoulder. The hostess (I'm thinkin she was a natural blonde) holds the door open for me to let me in. I thanked her, and asked her where the band was supposed to set up. She kind of looked at me for an uncomfortable minute and said "Oh, are you with the band?"
