People on Reverb...

I also get a lot of "Hello" and "How are you" messages on LinkedIn, it's usually people who are not native English speakers, and they're usually trying to start a conversation to ask a question. In USAmerican culture, you just ask your question straight up right off the bat. Like, "Weight?"

I’m sure it’s not that big of a deal, but I find this extremely irritating.

I’m trying to sell an item on Reverb, of course, and I wake up this morning to see I’ve got a message from someone. I think, “cool!” When I open the message, it literally just says “hello”. That’s it.

Ok, what’s the point of this? I just think it’s a combination of weird and rather annoying. I don’t feel like responding to extract the person’s intent. Is that wrong? I’m gettin’ too old for this ****.
it could have been a mistake and the person meant it for someone else. One time last year on reverb I had a message wondering why I hadn't paid for an item.. I replied back "Umm I didn't buy anything from you or from anyone." The person never even responded back with anything or a polite apology...Whatever. If I were you I probably would respond back with something like..ummm yeeeesss?? or Can I help you? or was there a purpose behind your message? OR Thanks for being the first person that said hi to me today:laugh:

I have a Reverb wishlist that has much of the same items on it for at least the past 60 days. Pretty sure any of them would appreciate a sign that people are out there. It blows me away how a significant group of sellers see annoyance with anyone who does anything but pay them exactly what they are asking + shipping with a markup. If someone responds to your sale item and it's not an insult or obvious troll, respond!! I just sold my Squire 51 to a guy who wanted to buy it for a brother who lost everything in a house fire. It was a tad complicated because he had never been on Reverb, was not into guitars and we had to work together to make his purchase work. There were 2 other 51's available, one less, one a smidge higher. He took mine because guess what??? I treated him as a buyer not an interruption or inconvenience. I came off the price because it was a reasonable offer and he was ok with my counter. Buyers are what let me be a buyer when the time comes.

This! Selling things takes work. Which includes dealing with people.

Ok, what’s the point of this?
My office has an IM system as well as email. Some people will send a "Hello" IM, I immediately reply "Hello", and then... nothing. But maybe they're just typing a long message and I'm impatient? Nope. Fifteen minutes later their next message arrives and it's a one-line question, no acknowledgement of the delay. Of course everyone can't be expected to immediately reply to all IMs, but if you're the one who initiated the conversation how can you not be ready to chat? Would they also phone someone and then immediately put the recipient of the call on hold?

(I realise that's only tangentially related to the OP's situation, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to vent.)

I think of hellos being very similar to what you do when testing a network. You send a test signal called a ‘ping’ (i.e. “hello”) and wait to see if there’s any response. A response back tells you the device is communicating with the network and you can now start sending it actual data.

I’d just message back a “Hi. What’s up?”

I had a good one on Reverb a couple weeks ago. I "bought" a Fender deluxe bass case. Had a few messages with the seller, latches all work? Keys? Etc...
So about 20 minutes after I "buy" it and send payment, I get a message that says "I accidentally put the wrong shipping amount".
I asked what he meant. He says he realizes now that the shipping price was too low.
I basically said, you named the price and listed the shipping, I paid, that's a done deal, ship it.
He says, "cancel your order". I said "no way in Hell I'm letting have my money AND the item, refund me or ship it."
Refunded asap. ***? Theres a shipping calculator in the listing set up.
People......
