People who make noises when they play....

This is really getting to be one of my biggest pet peeves, people who make noises when they play.

One guitar player I know whom I actually like as a friend is so bad about this I cringe anymore whenever he asks me to jam...For solo cues he doesn't use hand gestures, instead he'll shout out "Yo take a solo", sometimes all the way across the room depending on how he's talking to, other times he'll just make noises for no apparent reason..I guess it's excitement or something, but it really throws off the whole vibe.

Not sure why that made me laugh, but it did. Thankfully I don't know anyone that does that, and if they did, yes... it would be a big pet peeve of mine, too.

Played with a drummer in the 70's who always hummed along to the lead vocal which was really off-putting to the lead singer and we other 2 guys who added the harmony. He was tone deaf and couldnt hold a tune at all. Luckily he only ever did it at band practise but in the small room we used the humming would bleed through my mic as I was that close to his kit. He never realised he was doing it till we told him one night and credit to the guy, he never did it again. It was really horrible and even now when I think of it I cant help but smile.

We were recording bass track & drum track together. The engineer was panicking, he couldn't work out where the heck this odd noise was coming from - it was me! In the end I stuck a pen in my mouth to remind me to shut up.

I play with a jazz pianist who vocalizes/sings almost everything he plays. I know a lot of pianists do that, and you can't actually hear it out front, but I noticed and thought it was kinda cute. Maybe I should start doing so during improvisations too, I think I saw something like that on the Wooten DVD.

Sometimes I silently mouth what I'm playing if the part is very difficult. I mostly trained it out using a mirror while I practice.

Played with a drummer that would literally growl when he got excited or during a fill. Never heard it in our practice room while we were getting the band ready to gig. First gig, and man oh man, the singer and I couldn't find where this very present growl was coming from (we'd never played with him until then). During break, talk to guitarist, and hes' like "oh, yeah, drummer always does that." Oddly, none of my muso friends ever asked me about it after gigs. They surely would have if they heard it. It then became a huge joke. Guitarist and I would act like we're expecting something, you know, looking at each other with anticipation. Then he'd hit a big fill, with his growl, and we'd lose it (but kept the song together). Still don't know how no one could hear it in the audience. Best drummer I ever played with.

Hilarious! This morning, a guy in the next stall was making the same exact noise... he must have 'soloing a track'.

I have a drummer friend who does stuff like that. He shouts at people from behind the kit to do this or do that.
