What kind of music are you playing that enthusiastic vocalization throws you off? I play in a blues band where we yell at each other all the time. Sometimes it's the only way we know when to change or solo as the leader can be quite random at times.

Its mainly jam band (Dead tunes)...It throws me off because I'll be sitting on a nice groove and than all of a sudden theres yelling or some other noise that comes from the guy and it ruins the whole vibe.

Honestly, no matter what the genre I couldn't imagine playing in a band where the members are yelling at each other over the music...

I don't know if he made an accompaning noise, but Louis Bellson used to completely lose control of his face when totally immersed in a Drum Solo.

As far as I know, I don't make any noises while playing - but I've tried the note vocalization/humming while practicing, though. And it does actually help, even though I don't understand the mechanism. It sort of takes the place of thinking and worrying about scales, position etc. and just helps you to concentrate on the note you're looking for. Your ears and mouth are working as a reference to your fingers - or something like that.

Well, random noises and members all yelling at each other on stage could get a little magoo, for sure.

But I actually enjoy it, and audiences often consider it part of the show, when bandleaders who know how to conduct call out solos or changes spontaneously. Sometimes the musician being addressed isn't looking and hand signals won't work. Think Springsteen, James Brown, et. al. It can be done in an entertaining way.
