Perfect PJ bass?

I'll settle for these.

I agree with everyone else, basically if you can go to a local music store and see if you can actually find and play a PJ bass. I owned one for a while and I did like it, however I found that I mainly used it for a P-bass and hardly used the Jazz pup which still sounded good. But then I had to sell it. The P/J config is nice to get the best of both sounds, but like have said what you like may be totally different from what other will and also your view may change after actually playing one.

My Dad (RIP) took me to a basement on Haight Avenue in the Bronx in '79 to buy this thang in mint original condition with ohsc for the princely sum of $250. However, being the 16 year old budding entrepreneur that I was, I talked Sammy Faustino down to $200 and took her home ! The J-Pickup has been in there since 1980! Many mods and a color change later, here she sits, ready to take on any gig you might have ! She's looking at me right now saying, "Take me out to play!".
Thanks, Dad....my earliest and most lasting musical influence !

I've got a Lakland 55-01 that I converted into a PJ with a Nordstrand NP5 in the front, and a drop in Big Split in the back. All that to get the Lakland 5 string neck that is just heaven for me. While it's certainly not built with a 'proper' J pickup in any of the the 'traditional' locations, it freakin' rocks. Like a moron I once sold it, but fortunately was able to get it back. I won't be selling it again.

That being said, I also have a straight P and a straight J and don't expect the PJ to replace either. But when I go into a new situation and take only 1 bass, that's the one I take.

I'm leaning towards building one from warmoth parts:

Swamp Ash
Bottom Route
Gotoh 201 Bridge
Jazz Neck from Goncalo Alves/Pau Ferro
Hipshot ultralights w/ Drop Tuner
6150 Frets, Graphtech Nut

right about here I get scetchy.. I do not have an electronics plan.. I think Sadowsky Pre/Pickups.. I think.. then i get plans to do an Audere with a Nordstrand NP4 and an Ultra Jazz bridge and that sounds good too.. Perhaps after that I can try a set of EMG PJ's with an Aguilar OBP-3? :) well thats how all my basses go.

I don't think you'll regret building one from Warmoth parts. I did and I am pretty happy with mine:

Realize though that you may need to drop some money on proper setup and also that resale on these things is poor. That was OK for me since I'll never sell my bass - it suits me too well.

My possible favorite among several is the Fender MIJ "Precision" "Cowboy " bass, and a Fender Precision Bass Lyte with a Demeter 3 Band pre, and a Jazz Bass Special w/ PJ config w/ active pre and P-body ..overall a tough choice but I keep playing the Cowboy wich cost $120.00 on C-list. haha often more fun than my 2-4k basses.
funny eh...joy is not necessarily found by $$$ spent!!!

I've been curious about this combination on and off for a long time. The ones I've tried (p bass with the added j pickup) (also with j neck on p bass with j pickup) have sounded a bit different, but still very good.

Any tips on good manufacturers on these bodies? P bass with j pickp added. (I'll easily find a good neck)

Unless someone has a loaded body like this lying around collecting dust...

Nice looking crowd. Looked like lots of fun. Suffice to say - most of my gigs don't look like that.

I'm all over the map. Steely Jam gigs usually have good crowds. That was the first night of the San Juan Capistrano summer concert series and the park was packed. Last Sunday my regular nostatic trio + gig had a packed bar due to the NBA playoff game. Sunday before we played to about 10 people tops. 1 or 10 or 100 or 1000 - any number works for me...

20+ works for me. The gigs where there are just a handful are painful for me unfortunately. An old band member used to say: "I don't care - we'll get paid to practice." I never found that funny. :) Playing for me is fun - when there's a crowd to play to.

I'd rather stay home than play to an empty venue.

I certainly prefer a crowd, but I'd rather have 3 people who are really listening than 100 who are there only to get their drink on. While it can be a fun challenge to try and win over the people who don't care, having people who want to participate in the musical conversation is always great. As for an empty house, I'd still rather play as at least I can have that conversation with the other band members.

Getting back to the OP, my AmDlxP is the only fretted bass I own right now, and is what I use on the Steely Jam gigs, and use it for nostatic gigs on some of the more funky tunes. So far it is "perfect" for my needs and I've ditched everything else except my Rob Allens.
