Perfect PJ bass?

Giorgetto said:
All 3 of my Pat Wilkins PJ's are superb. I usually have the neck pickup at or near full volume and dial in just a bit of the bridge pickup and back off the tone knob slightly. Here are some pics of one of them.

If my Wilkins j is any indication, if money was no object and I was buying a pj, pat wilkins is the first guy I would call.

I put together one, and bought another. Sound great, look great.

1972 Jazz neck on a 2001 50th Anniversary of the electric bass body. Nice chunky 70's neck, modern P tone, 8.4 lbs.

1966 Jazz neck on a '70 P body. Great neck, old DiMarzio PUs, lots of PG screws. 8 lbs. A blues machine.

Did I miss a turn somewhere? Does the description "PJ Bass" refer to any hybrid of P-Bass and J-Bass parts (such as bodies and necks) or does it refer specifically to a bass that is fitted with P-Bass and J-Bass pickups?

My understanding is that the OP meant P Tone / PUs with a Jazz neck, not necessarily with an added Jazz PU.

Anybody ever owned or played my idea of a perfect PJ bass?

That low, growly Precission tone but with the maneuverability of a Jazz (thin, fast neck etc.).

In theory this is my ideal bass but i havn't come across one as yet.

oh, i thought we were talking pup config ...

i like the q/j (being reversed p - get it?) that ibbys use. the p just sounds meatier on the thinner strings that way. i would like to have a very high end SR ... my cheap little sr300dx has me hooked on it - just wish i had a better pre.

ultimate for me - would probably be a performer neck on a tele/p body with active q/j and a nice 18v 3 band. wired v-v-t w/ b-m-h and a passive switch. i jsut prefer vvt to vbt ... i'm used to peavey knobs.

I finally took a few pics of the new Warmoth PJ4. I had a P Bass back in the 80s that I had routed for the J pup, but the guy put it in the 70s position closer to the bridge, so I didn't end up keeping that one - I prefer the standard bridge pup location. Anyway, fast forward to a few years ago - found a great deal on a white Highway 1 Fender P Bass and had planned on doing the mod again with the J rout, but I really didn't like the neck - I prefer the J neck - sold it. I think I bought this Warmoth body and neck around 6 months ago and finally got around to putting it all together. Warmoth did the tobacco burst - bought it off their showcase and had them rout for the J pup / end jack - and bought the standard J neck at the same time with nut / no finish / no face dots. I used Hipshot Ultra Lights, SD Q-pounder pups, Hipshot A style bridge, passive electronics. I stained the neck with a honey Minwax, then a few coats of Minwax poly clear satin (spray can) , finished off with the Warmoth chrome logo
(I think it looks pretty cool - a lot better than their "turtle" logo and I didn't want to make it into a fake Fender) and I don't like the blank headstock look. I played this bass on a gig last weekend and played most of the gig with it - and I'm usually a 5 string guy! I can get great P Bass tones out of it as well as thick funk tones (both pups wide open), or roll off the P pup a bit and get a nice Jaco type tone....a lot of great usable sounds with no preamp. I'm diggin' the simplicity of this thing after years of playing basses with 3-band preamps and junk. This seems to be the perfect PJ for me.

The phasing can indeed be an issue!

I'd love to hear soundfiles of your basses, especially the Dingwall and Sadowsky ones.

- P Pickup (Rock/Motown/Soul/Bluesy stuff)
- J Pickup (Jaco growl)
- Both Pickups (will it have a good slap sound as well)

There is a review of a Sadowsky Metro HPJ by Ed Friedland and while I love all soundfiles of pickups on their own, I'm not shure if like the slap sound of them both together... :-/

I think that we can modify any bass to make it a PJ, but for the OP the real PJ (great P sound and fast jazz neck) with an afordable price is the Reggie Hamilton. I've tried a BB414 and an SB2 before, and now I'm very happy with my Reggie Hamilton. It's a Jazz Bass with a P pickup. Moreover, we can switch passive/active; a real do-it-all bass. I also have a Sterling HS, but it's something else..

Yes Josh,

I have owned your idea of a perfect bass for
over 25 years. The problem is that you will
never find another one. Westone Electra
model X640N. It has ruined me. I have never
been able to buy a Jazz or a PJ because they
just don't measure up to my standards.

I buy P basses instead,
