my yamaha bb3000s nails it for me, I tend to roll off the j just 10-15% to thicken it up, it sounds awesome fingerstyle and slap.

That, and all the slanty stuff...The only thing that detracts from its perfection is the high price...

What was the total cost for parts if you don't mind me asking?
That, and all the slanty stuff...![]()
I came up with a total of $942, but I already had some of the parts. You can probably pull it off for under $1000 for sure. Body was $395. I almost went for the Allparts neck for around $200, but I really had to have no face dots (side dots only), so I spent more like $300 on a Warmoth neck with my specs. I already had a pickguard and various other parts, so I bought the Hipshot bridge and tuners from Best Bass Gear - they usually have a better price than Hipshot direct. The neck was a little tight, so I had to carefully sand the neck pocket. No shims were required - bolted up nice.
I'm glad I built this vs. buying a Fender PJ - got the finish I want, no face dots, pups I like, etc....
Pics to follow - neck is drying now.
This thread makes me want to go bass shopping just so I can play some of the newer PJ-basses that TBers write about.
Years ago, before PJ-configured basses were offered standard by manufacturers I played both P-Basses and J-Basses that had been converted into PJ-configurations (and occasionally some dual-P configurations as well). I always found that the mix of a split-humbucking (P-type) pickup with a straight-across (J-type) pickup created odd phasing for either the E/A string pair or the D/G string pair - depending upon where the pickups were positioned. One pair of strings would sound "solid" while the other pair sounded "phased." I found this annoying. I also never found a dual-P combination that I liked. Because of this phasing I prefer having the same type of pickup (J, Soapbar ...) in all positions in my multi-pickup basses.
Do the newer PJ basses still have an out of phase (Strat-like) tone for one pair of strings? Is it one of the tones that PJ players want?
