Peter Hook chorus: alternative to Clone theory (not analogue man)?

Cheers guys! Sounds like i need to try out a Small Cone. Pooped into my local EHX dealer today and they didn't have one to try :crying:

Got to try a Boss Chorus ensemble though... better (richer) than my CEB-3 but comparison with a Small clone would be nice

I have done a bunch of simple modifications to my Small Clone that make it much more tweakable than the very basic single knob/single switch- added Delay Time Pot, Depth Pot, Blend Pot, and Feedback controls as well as expanding the rate control. I found all these mods on the net and just tweaked a bit from there. Joy Division and New Order have made some of my favorite music and I feel like my Small Clone can get me in a similar tonal universe as Hook, though I've never really tried to cop his tone (I did a JD cover night for a party many years ago, but it was long before I ever considered using effects or even knew that he had used a chorus). I think the original Clone Theory is different from later EHX Chorus pedals in that it had that "Edge" control that added a whole lot of top end shimmer (and also alot of noise along with it). My Small Clone definitely adds a nice shimmer and edge to the tone at the settings I normally use, but I have never owned any of the Clone Theory versions to make a direct comparison. I definitely haven't heard that same kind of metallicy shimmer from other choruses I have tried. My Small Clone was a cheap project for fun that ended up working perfectly for me after some fiddling!

Wow, that's a lot of mods in a tiny box.

I have the Clone Theory which I love and just put a Boss NS-2 on my board to hush up things when i'm not playing. The noise is there but not that obtrusive IMO.

The BassPod can emulate Hooky's sound pretty spot on. There's a thread elsewhere, I got the config from there. I am a big Hook fan through 30 years, and I've found that my Danelectro does a nice job, and is the least noisy chorus I've tried. But actually today I just dug up my old Ibanez BC10 bass chorus from the 80s I used it in a band, where I was allowed to "go Hooky" every now and then :o) I haven't tried it in many years, but I remember it as doing a good fat, not too noisy 80s chorus.

Boris- DLS Ultra Chorus II.

Blows any other pedal out of the water mentioned on this list for a Peter Hook sort of sound THickens your sound while adding a wonderful shimmer to it- and all very natural sounding- not metallic). I was the person that originally inquired about the same thing you did in the post that Mingus Addict mentioned.

Thanks for the suggestion but i just looked at the price :eek: Kind of rules it out for me at the mo

I am a huge PH fan. I used to get a very comparable sound with one of the old mxr super choruses from the 70's early 80's era. (The big yellow one with the attached power cable) Also nails the Steve Severin bass wobble really well. You could really modify this pedal with thte internal switches.
They are pricey if you find a good one. I know they reissued it, but I have no idea how it sounds.
I Now use a Tech21 chorus pedal that actually has a setting called "Hooky". Sounds pretty good, very clean, but so much of Peter's sound was the dirt too.

Hi everyone!! New forum member from Belgium here :-)

Just wanted to chime in to say you can get the Peter Hook sound with a Small Clone! Like somebody before me already said, set the depth at "up" and the speed somewhere between 9 and 10 o'clock and you're there. Inexpensive pedal, easy to use, authentic sounding, cool looks - what's not to love!

Another good alternative would be an "old" Boss CH-1 (analog version, pre-2001 - easy to find on eBay). It sounds a bit clearer and brighter than the Small Clone, but you can get almost the same sound (and much more), and without ANY noticeable low end loss!!

Imho you don't have to spend much money on it.

Thanks Coldwar. I actually gt to AB a Small Cone and Boss Chorus ensemble today. The clone is so much richer than the Boss. Def prefered it.
