Phil Jones speaker cables - worth it?

I, for one, will NEVER buy or use another PJB product ever again. I bought the 4x5 cab years ago and it was an unmitigated POS. Quality Control was horrible. The tolex was separating and there was a buzz I couldn't resolve. I played exactly one half gig with it and returned it as soon as I could. I also bought the $99 PJB headphones and THOSE were also an unmitigated POS. They broke within three months of barely any use. I mentioned my unhappiness at both sub-standard purchases in the Phil Jones FB group and the man himself, Mr. Phil Jones, tore me a new one. He said I was lying and was basically otherwise thrashing me because I was unhappy with his "products." Never offered at all to make it right, so eff that guy and his "products." Shows to go you how much he cares about his customers. I will bash Phil Jones and his "products" every chance I get, in every Phil Jones post I see.

Yikes! Sounds like you've had quite a bad experience with PJB stuff. I've also joined the "never again" club, but strictly based on bang for buck ratio and overall marketing fishyness. I had a Suitcase and 4B cab, it was underpowered and heavy kit but it held up good for the 6 years I gigged with it. Build quality was good and the local store I bought it from provided good customer service. I bought the headphones at the same time and still use them today. Maybe I was lucky...

...but yeah, this guy and his company totally give off a snake oil salesman vibe and I'm never getting near that stuff again.

Some of the stuff that irked me:
  • Typos and grammar mistakes in the brochures.
  • Inconsistent specs: For a given amp, the power @ ohms listed on the website, the owner's manual and on the amp's housing were all slightly different...so which is it, Mr. Jones?
  • Bogus claims in promo videos of 5'' drivers being surprisingly loud when they obviously aren't - get ready to crank that volume knob all the way up whenever a drum kit or electric guitar is part of the equation. The response felt immediate and transparent (it honestly sounded very good on its own), but low end extension was simply not there and it (8 x 5'' pushing maybe 300-ish W?) would struggle in just about any band context.
  • The Earbox was sure worth a laugh: A super expensive gadget to hang on a mic stand at ear level...to make up for the fact that you can't hear yourself for s?%&? on stage, because, well, see previous point.
  • Bogus claims about cables such as this one.
  • Dumb bragging about CNC-machined aircraft-grade aluminium amp knobs (way to inflate the price tag for absolutely nothing).
It's a very niche product. I know some upright players swear by their small PJB combos for quiet scenarios, but personally I can't see a situation where a much more reasonably-priced alternative wouldn't be equally suitable or better. The "bass guitar focused" rig I've acquired since then was more affordable, is miles ahead in terms of power, and sounds better even for upright.

Yes, like the iPhone reference. Yes folks love and swear by them. The form, the function, I get it.

But I live on a budget and just need stuff to work at a reasonable price point with a reasonable life span. I don't need something that every time a new one comes along, my headphones or charger now is obsolete, or I have to "upgrade" my stuff to make it work.

If I buy an amp I don't want to now buy an additional speaker to mount on a pole to hear myself :)

I not talkin' about those kids that buy two, three, four Subway cabs, that's another matter and for another reason :)

I own and love my Phil Jones cabinets.
I have two C4's,two C2's & a Cabinet 27. I also have a Double 4. I play with some fairly loud Rock bands(not Metal level)& usually use one C4 & one C2 with a Quilter BassBlock 800. If I need to get really loud two C4's. I usually do not have PA support for the bass.
Phil Jones gear isn't for everyone but it works great for me, I've had first rate service from them as well.
Having said that there's some of their stuff that seems suspect. The headphones sound nice but are made cheaply & are prone to break easily and the ear cushions go to hell pretty quickly. I'm not sure about the Earbox either.
Accessories seem to be something that manufactures like to over price. I think they depend on people who are brand loyalists. People who think that because something has the brand name it must be superior.Look at all the geegaws Fender puts their name on.

Myself I though they were the stuff, back in the day.
I think there appeal was back in the stone ages of big heavy amps and cabs. First small lite rigs, even lighter than the SWR Redhead.

Now everything can be lite, but pack more punch.
Their bigger offerings might be good but for their small stuff. I'd rather pack my WD head and a small cab and not have to worry if the Suitcase can make the gig :)

I'd love to see a 0.5 ohm speaker cable... it would take a LOT of work to make speaker wire have resistance anywhere near that LoL :)
The cable would warm up as well.

Your assessment here is incorrect. Say what you want about other Phil Jones gear or the man himself, but that C8 cabinet can melt your face.

Myself I'd rock these:

These, not so much:

But that's just me :)

I have a briefcase amp in my living room as a practice amp. I have gigged with it on one occasion, where it was supplying all the bass to a medium size room. (Not plugged into the PA, and I play in a blues/rock trio.) It was maxed out, and it didn't have the authoritative low end that the C8 has, but it did the job well enough. It blew people's minds when they learned that's what was producing the bass.

I have one of their speaker cables. It functions no differently than my Mogami Gold or generic cables purchased from Amazon. It might be more durable, but since I have not broken a speakon cable, I would not value the durability that highly. If you can find one at a good price like I did (closeout from a reputable PJB dealer), it is a solid cable. At the normal asking price absolutely a waste of money. It has been a good quality cable for me, but there are too many other high quality options available for less.

Just for fun a few pictures. In the one with two cables, it is photographed next to my Mogami Gold Speakon. They could cut some money off the price by changing the packaging.

But it's the packaging and the branding you are paying for... it's all about presentation and buying into the PJB universe. Just like us Apple users and our MacBooks/iPads/iPhones and branded accessories.

I certainly did not pay for it on the cable at the price I got it at. I paid a decent amount less for it than the Mogami.

In general I think PJB has this reputation among some players. I have and like my PJB Compact 8. Not the cheapest small cab I have owned but I also struggle with the overpriced label they get (while fully noting the cable is overpriced/unnecessary). Plenty of 2x10 cabinets that are at or above the price of the Compact 8. It is certainly in the higher priced half of the 2x10 sized cabinet market but it is far from alone in that space.

Note I recognize the C8 is not a 2x10, but that is the obvious comparison size given the cabinet size.

To be fair I've never tried the C8, I was referring to the 4 drivers of the Suitcase + 4 drivers of another 4B cab. I know there's been some changes since - I think they're all Neo now, among other things.

There's nothing wrong with making a fancy, blingy speaker cable and trying to sell it for a ton of money. Some people seem to have no end to their money, or the willingness to part with it.

I do have a problem with telling people hypothetical stories that will never actually apply in the real world in order to market said cable.

Personally, I make my own instrument and speaker cables so I know exactly what I'm getting.

I have a set of them, one goes neutrik to 1/4 in which I don't believe they make anymore. The store I worked at was an original dealer when they had like 3-4 nationally. Is there a real difference? Yes, I believe there is in the sound. Being said they are heavy and on the 1/4 I have to have something bracing underneath it so it doesn't pull down on the amp and usually need a piece of wood extension to make sure it is supported-I'll try to take a picture next time it's set up. Is it worth all this is another question, no. I usually use my old CBI 1/4 cables (maybe 10 gauge?) because it's less to think about.

Buy some Klotz LY240T 2x4.0 mm speaker cable, some Neutrik connectors and make your own.

This Klotz cable will make better cables than you could buy at 10 times the price. If you can't manage the technology, buy the parts and take them to an electrician. Pay him to connect them. Make up several, it'll take him 5 mins.

Hypothetically, if you were to send me $100, it might make my morning coffee taste better and make me less grumpy... I'd be happy to test this out if you were to send me $100 (hypothetically of course) ;)

Do you accept Paypal? Let me get my wallet... :D

Time to buy a hint… is the middle word “Outta?” If so, I can work out the other two.

Bingo!

I actually bought one of these about 10 years ago and evaluated it both in listening tests and measurements. I returned it because it didn't do anything a regular IEC cable didn't do as I, of course, knew all along. The guy who owned the company contacted me personally about why I sent it back. He didn't like what I had to say about it. :D

I spent several years working for a hifi manufacturer (I mean really high end, $30k speaker and amp system high end) and there was no end to this "audiophile grade" nonsense. From high dollar resistors and capacitors to fuses to wire to cables to stands for lifting cables off the floor. My boss swore he heard huge differences in these things. I don't think any of them made a lick of difference.

Yeah, but as my sig says, capacitance has potential.

Front of House

In this instance it stands for "word I can't say on TB Outta Here." Short for GTFOH. :D

PJB is an interesting one for sure.

I've got the PJB C4 cab, grabbed it used for a steal on Reverb. Small and compact, not as light as you'd expect, and solid - built like a tank, really - but yeah in terms of volume don't expect it to blow any doors off. Is it loud? Surprisingly so for such a small cabinet, yes. Is it louder than a good 2x10? Uh... no. And definitely not the same big low end as a good 1x12 or 1x15 or what have you.

The thing is, some of their marketing might make you think (perhaps not directly, but may imply) that you'll be able to roll up to a gig with one of those and keep up with a loud full band and, like, dude that ain't gonna happen... but as long as you understand that from the start, and know why you're getting it, and it's for the right reasons, you'll like the gear. Extremely transparent and clear sound, it works amazingly well for upright and acoustic instruments so like if you're an upright player or have a real fancy-pants bass where you really want to get all details of the sound out and let it shine, few do it better. My Marleaux Consat loves that C4.

I also have the Bighead Pro headphone amp/interface, which is a nice handy little tool. Solidly-built, good features for what it is, handy high quality audio/USB interface I use for recording ideas. You can even use it as an external preamp for a passive instrument. Useful little bit of kit, I'd recommend that.

Some of their products though are kind of odd, or just not cut out for purpose - the headphones stand out in that while do have a lovely clear low end response and are very transparent and comfortable, they don't have that solid build quality other PJB stuff has; they're extremely fragile, so yeah definitely skip those - I took mine off and left them on my bed, I accidentally put my hand on it when sitting back down with just a bit of my weight and they snapped just way, way too easily. From what it seems this sort of thing is far from unique. I didn't even have them long enough for the pads to start falling apart like some other people have, so I just went back to my JBLs and they're fine.

From what I've seen/read, the Earbox I guess might come in handy for pit work or things like that, like maybe someone who's stationary and doesn't want to use IEMs but I personally couldn't ever picture a situation where I'd need it. But I'm guessing enough people do for it to sell? It does strike me again as something an upright player would probably find more useful than a bonehead rock/metal cat like me.

And yeah, the cables are just :roflmao::laugh::roflmao: like bro I ain't gonna pay all that cash when I could get something exactly the same for literally a fraction of the price. The manual is right in that using an "inferior" cable can cause damage and whatnot - that's true - but it's kind of sneaky way of saying it and yeah that kinda thing is off-putting. As for the ohms thing... I'll give the benefit of the doubt and call it a typo.

Will I get more PJB stuff? Tempted by a BG-400, the D-400 too looks nice. I'm on the lookout for a really clean, transparent and compact head for upright/acoustic stuff in general. But yeah, I know what I'm getting it for and I know I won't be storming any festival stages with it :D

To be fair I've never tried the C8, I was referring to the 4 drivers of the Suitcase + 4 drivers of another 4B cab. I know there's been some changes since - I think they're all Neo now, among other things.
Actually, the Neo versions have been discontinued, and just standard ones remain. No clue as to why this is. I'll give this to PJB, they update their products a lot and the evolution over time has been stark - the Flightcase/suitcase combos of yore cannot compete with the BG-400 in terms of build quality and sound.
