Very cool! I kept waiting for one of NYPD's finest to walk into frame and tell'em to pack it up or start writing them tickets. I have a friend who was tossed in jail for busking... in New Orleans! :scowl:

They weren't busking. Their set was part of the "Jazz in Colors" festival put on by Peter Shapiro the promoter who owns the Capitol Theater in Portchester and the Brooklyn Bowl. Thirty jazz acts playing at scattered sites around Central Park. Phil's set was not officially announced on the schedule but he did put it on his Facebook page.

Phil recently signed a deal with Peter Shapiro to work exclusively for him in 2014. All the shows booked will involve extended residencies at one venue, no touring. The only other Phil shows next year will be at Terrapin Crossroads.

I know someone who was there and when they started playing there were only about 30 people in the audience... maybe 125 or so by the time they finished up.

I was surprised at how fat a sound Phil got out of that little battery powered amp but haven't listened on a proper system yet.

The show last night was awesome. He went on at about 815, and took a good long set break but played until 12:30! Phil looked ecstatic and full of life. Aders Osborne and Luther Dickenson killed it, they played a ton of Allman stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing a setlist....

It's great to hear Phil leaving his standard comfort zone. I've always wanted to hear him in Scofield's band rather than him having Scofield in his band, and this is a step in that direction.

I love hearing Phil play more straight ahead jazz oriented stuff (or really anything outside the usual Dead oriented material). That being said, I have no complaints about hearing Scofield in his band. I was there for the first two shows when Sco subbed for Larry Campbell (12/3/05 and 12/4/05) and they achieved liftoff! I'll never forget the energy in that place during and after Althea - just incredible! He and Barry played so well off of each other... and Barry being so familiar with the "Garcia" parts pretty much gave Sco free reign. IMO, Barry is the unheralded MVP of Phil & Friends. It always irked me when he would be asked to sit out in favor of Larry when Trey would sit-in during the '06 tour. I always enjoy when the guitar players have totally different styles (Trey/Kimock, Barry/Herring, Scofield/Barry, etc.) Scofield/Herring is the combo that I always wanted to see - it almost happened.

I'll have to give this lineup a listen! I'm always interested in hearing a Warren-less P&F's lineup. Isn't Phil's kid playing/singing on this tour as well? Not quite sure how I feel about that. I wish Phil would utilized Neal Casal and Jon Graboff more.

I've got to agree about Barry. He did a few tours with Great American Taxi when I was in that band and it was some of the best interaction I've ever had with a guitar player. He also played on our album, Reckless Habits. His chops, etc., are great, but his ears are HUGE! And he's a great guy.

I feel the same about Warren. And I'd have no problem seeing Scofield in Phil's band (although I do hope you have seen Scofield playing with Steve Swallow. That's just about perfection right there).

I think Neal is now playing with Taxi's keyboard player and Todd Snider and Dave Schools,etc., in The Hardworking Americans.

Oh yeah, I've seen Scofield with his band, Phil, and Medeski, Martin & Wood - always great! One of my favorite guitar players!

I'll have to check out The Hardworking Americans (didn't even know that they existed!), as I'm a big fan of all of those guys. Here's Todd Snider's tribute to the no-hitter Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher Dock Eliis threw while under the influence of LSD, in case anyone hasn't seen it:

Oh, and speaking of Larry Campbell, if there are any fans of him or Levon Helm (who isn't a fan of Levon), check out the documentary "Ain't in It For My Health." It chronicles Levon's last few years and his struggles with throat cancer. After seeing how Rick Danko's widow was living you'll understand why Levon hated Robbie so much. RIP Levon, this world needs more people like you in it.
