Philip Kubicki RIP

hmm, that is sad. I am playing here in about 2 hours, so I will throw some notes his way...

it really makes you think about how every aspect of what we do - every element - was at one time an idea in someones head. All of the elements that we sometimes deem untouchable, or take for granted were someones "baby" at one time...an organic part of someones thought process. All of these ideas intertwine to create the bass world we all are a part of.

Not to wax poetic, but it just made me think...

Here's mine from late 1992- made by
Phil (post fender)

A nice, soft spoken man; I was struck by how...gentle and easy going he was when we spoke once on the phone. He had told me I needed to send him the neck of my Kubicki X Factor as he needed to get the exact spring installed in the lever for Drop D tuning as you couldn't just use any spares ( I was lucky to own two at one time ) did the work for nothing, got it back super quick. What a nice guy and yes, a real loss of person and craftsman. So glad I actually got to speak with him.

Extremely sad to hear about Phil's passing. I had bought a new Ex-Factor last year. He was amazing about giving advice about taking care of it among other things. The music world has lost a great man.

Attaching a picture of me playing my Ex-Factor for an album launch in Dubai on the 7th of March.

Sirmoog, is what I see a Maple fretboard bass, or is it just a lighting effect???

It's a multi-laminate maple fretboard... just like the neck and body (body is a 2 piece Maple) :) Apparently, according to Phil (when I spoke to him) he told me that this particular bass was quite special (I don't remember the exact reason, maybe it was how he built it). Honestly, I didn't know he didn't make many maple fretboard ex-factors, so I feel lucky to own one. :)

Attaching some more pictures.

Very elegant artistic statement that bass - It really focuses his sparse modern design. And all maple coupled w/his awesome pu/preamp - that has got to sound killer.

Thanks guys :) It does shake the foundations of wherever I'm playing so I have to tame the volume knob quite a bit. I have yet to buy an amp worthy of this bass. The closese I've come to is a Mark Bass... Tried it out in one of the shops and I didn't want to go home... just sit there pet the bass. But yes... It's certainly a rare Ex-Factor... Although I have seen 1 more person with a Maple fretboard.

I met Phil once a few years back and I have always admired his work. Truly a nice guy and one of the best builders to ever live. Had a lot of passion for what he did and I could tell by how he lit up when we where talking. Very inspiring. A true genius when it came to building and designing. The luthier world lost one of its greats. His d lever was pure genius!!!

R.I.P PHIL.

The Ex-Factor was the bass I first fell in love with when I began playing the instrument. Throughout so many years just dreamed of having one. I owned a Key Factor 5 at one point and I do own a Ex-Factor made by him for me in 2005. Never talked to him, only e-mailing (long story). But definitely, this man and his creation are part of my life as well.
Thank you, Phil, Sir, for having made the bass of my dreams.
RIP/Que en paz descanse, Phil Kubicki.
