There was a Jimmy Williams who sang with Double Exposure and the Trammps who passed on after battling cancer but I believe he's not the bassist you're thinking of. I'll call my family in Philly to confirm. One of my closest friends cut tracks with the bassist Jimmy Williams so I should hear something soon.

I am surprised that it hasn't been posted here yet, but Philly bassist Jimmy Williams passed away last week. As one of the house bassists for Philadelphia International Records after Ronnie Baker left, he played and often created famous bass lines for tunes like 'Ain't no stopping us now" and "Love TKO". He was the bass player for the O'Jays for decades and had retired last year. I was lucky enough to briefly meet Jimmy a few times, he was a kind human being and a giant on the bass.

Back in the late 70's I was in a disco/funk band. "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" was our opening number. Great bass line!

his bass playing was no doubt legendary and second to none...I'm glad that I was blessed to hear and see Jimmy in my late teen to early adult years..and always felt that's what a bass player should sound like..

I was in Ted's band from 78-82, on trombone...I knew that most of the PIR bass lines were from Ronnie Baker, Sugar Bear Foreman, or Jimmy Williams. Tonight, in the car, I heard "The More I Get, The More I Want," and was captivated by the great bass playing...looked it up, and Mr. Williams it seems to have been. What a monster! So I'm late to the party, but RIP, Jimmy Williams.

Teddy Pendergrass' "The More I Get" has some great Williams lines during an extended outro vamp. I find vamps, outros, break-downs and sing-alongs instructive, as the bass parts for the basic song may well have been charted, but it's likely that a studio bassist has more freedom when asked to fill such open space. So the bass line on "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" (McFadden & Whitehead) is undeniable -- but that line might have been charted by the songwriters or an intermediate arranger.

Jimmy Williams, the vocalist, was a powerhouse! Had the pleasure of tromboning with him throughout 1976, when "Ten Percent" was a dance floor staple during that Summer of Disco. RIP. Jimmy Williams, the bassist, was a powerhouse. who also managed to keep it together throughout a remarkable career, gigging with the O'Jays long after Philly International effectively went out of business. RIP.
