Huh? I picked up the bass when I was 34. Dude, you're a friggin' zygote compared to half the guys here.

Yeah? What does that have to do with me becoming famous? I have my sights set on my BS in physics and then going to grad school, not going from venue to venue, hoping that someone important notices the band and signs us up, meanwhile flipping burgers and sleeping in my car.

I'm doing this for fun.

These guys are the SOLUTION, not the problem. The other day you posted that you couldn't even play a song all the way through without getting bored. Catch the hint these guys are trying to lay on you and play some MUSIC.

Catch the hint I am trying to beat you over the head with: I DON'T LIKE THEIR MUSIC!

Why do I get bored? Because it's root, 5, root, 5. Sorry, I play metal. Things like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, etc. The basslines there are just plain boring with the exception of a few. That's why I get bored and that's why I want to do something different. I don't want to groove. If I started dancing in the middle of a metal show, I'd get my ass kicked. I don't want to play My Girl. I don't want to play Jamerson lines or Jaco. It's not me.

Listen to Children of the Damned or Aces High by Iron Maiden. That's more of what I want to play. Not following the guitars, not making people dance.

I'm sorry, I get bored just playing the root or following the guitar. If I wanted to play the guitar part, I'd do it on my guitar. If I wanted to keep playing the same two notes for 4+ minutes, I'd play drums.

Actually it had nothing to do with what you said. I'm sorry if you took it that way. It was more of a general statement about music. That is why you were not quoted. Had i intended to reply to your specific comment, I would have. Check my post, I didn't!

People like you are the entire problem. It's NOT about the groove IF I DON'T WANT IT TO BE!

Classical is an exception? Then what about Prog Rock? Metal?

Why should bass be limited by something like groove?

I'm the problem? I think people who work really hard at playing loud bad music that on one wants to listen to for pennies based on stupid childish ideals about their "art" and expressing themselves after they get off they're day jobs are "the problem".

Excellent generalization. Love the stereotype.

As are most of us.

Might want to reread that;)

And you'd get your ass kicked for dancing? Sweet... at least you're not subject to the whims of peer pressure... you're above all that:D

You honestly can't get past this frankly odd idea that to groove you MUST to play root notes or follow the guitar, can you? That you'd actually say this AND mention Jamerson and Jaco and not see the complete disconnect is pretty telling.

Dude, I grew up playing Iron Maiden - Steve Harris is one of the reasons I started to play bass. If you think he doesn't groove on every single tune he plays, you're not listening.

Then clearly we differ on what groove is. I think he's being melodic at parts and drives hard on others. To me that's not groove.

To me groove is when it makes you want to dance. That's how I always saw it. That's what everybody here has been implying up until this thread came along.

Everybody?
:D

Not true. Some just haven't been paying attention to the people not saying that.

Groove=Dance? Not necessarily.

Durr I told you I don't like Jamerson's music style. It's just not me. I don't want to be like him or play like him.

"I'm sorry, I get bored just playing the root or following the guitar. If I wanted to play the guitar part, I'd do it on my guitar. If I wanted to keep playing the same two notes for 4+ minutes, I'd play drums".

Preceded by this:

"Catch the hint I am trying to beat you over the head with: I DON'T LIKE THEIR MUSIC!

What do Jaco and Jamerson have to do with your stunted idea of groove ( "just playing the root or following the guitar")?
