A bit of both. Place a coin on a floor tom drum head, see what happens when you play your bass with the cab close to the drum. Snake oil merchants would have you think that the coin is causing the head to vibrate.
This relates to the speaker spikes popular amongst the oddiophile crowd. Half the spike merchants say that they improve the speaker performance by better coupling the cab to the floor. The other half say they improve the speaker performance by de-coupling the cab to the floor.![]()
I've never seen spikes used on pro-sound gear. They do have one legitimate use, with home theater subs. They help keep them from dancing across the floor, especially a carpeted floor. But as for speaker response, no difference. And as always that's not a guess, educated or otherwise, it's a measured result.But one hundred percent of stage managers and club owners will tell you they hate stage spikes.

why not stack them vertically, instead of on their sides? you'll get a little more height that way.
alternately, maybe you could rig up a stable way to stack them that has the top cab tilted back a bit; they'd still be together, but the top cab would be aimed up more towards your ears.
