I converted my Patrice Blanc SB52 into piccolo tuning (BEADG) since I got my first 6er.

I really like being able to play both guitar and bass sounding licks without having to cope with narrow string spacing and weird tuning (that ugly EADGBE ;-) ).

You can hear some piccolo bass I recorded on these tracks :

Invalid Link Removed : guitar-style rythmics in the beginning, slap + fingerstyle chorus, synth bass + synth bass solo (distortion + envleope filter), ending background slap line

Invalid Link Removed : saturated+delayed line entering at 01:00. saturated+delayed slap at 1:44, saturated chorus at 02:07, ending saturated tapping at 02:30

Invalid Link Removed : piccolo synth (saturation+envelope filter) lead and background lines

Invalid Link Removed : clean arpeggios entering at 00:45 and 01:37

I'd advise you to listen to the Remy Chaudagne Piccolo Quartet : Paris.

Just for fun : trying a piccolo is easy, you just have to buy a new set of strings !

Same question, then; why would you want the third in there? On a guitar it's there for chording, but on a bass, I'd want it to be straight fourths. I guess you could chord on it more easily, but IMO most bands have too much chording as it is.

Because I play guitar a lot lately so I'm kind of used to the high strings being b and e.

I can't post any pics you can't find on any old search engine. It's just a bass guitar tuned an octave higher thus making it pretty much a guitar with a couple less strings.

The acoustic piccolo bass is a little more interesting, it's like a double bass tuned an octave higher.

I originally had my Rockbass Corvette strung piccolo ( I bought it for that purpose). I have since restrung it in normal range because I have no use for piccolo range in my current band. I will convert it back someday soon because I really enjoyed it. Eventually I'd like to get a 6 string bass for piccolo use.

All you need in order to convert a bass to piccolo is new strings. I used the piccolo set offered by D'Addario and they sound fine.

Another good source for piccolo bass listening is Brian Bromberg's CD "Jaco" he uses it for the shredder solo on the second 'Teen Town' at the end of the disc.

He also uses it quite a bit on the CD "Metal".
