He massively respected those that came before ( and they respected him just as much ) but he didn't just stand on their shoulders, he took a dead form of music and put it back in the public conscience in the era of hair metal and synth bands. No mean feat.

Eric Clapton was asked once whether he or Jeff Beck were better-- his answer was something like, "Jeff's got some chops that are better than mine, I have some chops that are better than his, but Hendrix is better than both of us anyway--" the Gunfighter's Rule: There is always someone better-- so don't sweat the little stuff.

(ETA: And as much as I like both of them and recognizing they are both basically local acts originally, I still have to go with Heart)
