Pick scratchy sound

Once again, thanks to @GKon and a bunch of other guys who kindly helped me achieve better speed and accuracy by suggesting grabbing the pick like a guitarist.
The downside of this approach is that when I play I naturally sag my hand in a relaxed position and the pick ends up being almost perpendicular to the strings, thus scratching the ridges of the strings creating a weird scratchy sound. I actually kind of like it, but it's not really what I would want to hear when I play along with a record. I generally would like to get a cleaner sound.
The reason I'm asking is because I have observed famous players using what seems to be the same technique as mine but manage to get a much nicer, more solid sound.
What can I do to improve? Thank you :)

On any strumming, picking problem find out how to do it correctly. I know that is what you are asking about. As your hands are not like mine, or any one else's for that matter, experiment till you get a good clean sound.

Then take your bass and pick over to the couch and watch an hour of TV while working with your pick. After an hour you will have the correct way in muscle memory.

Course if you do an hour of sloppy pick work you will have that sloppy pick work in muscle memory.

Experiment until you get the sound you want, then go ingrain it into muscle memory.
