Apparently, the first post you read in this thread was #154.
OK, Billy Sheehan is disqualified. But can a pick virtuoso keep up with a proficient alternating four finger player for speed? It would be an interesting contest.
Why make it a contest? Don’t you like music?
Yep, music is not (shouldn't be, anyway) a competition sport.
Just thought it would be fun to see how fast can a human can possibly pick or pluck a bass. That doesn't make me a music hater.
I'm in agreement that music should be about the music. But, there's nothing wrong with a couple of musicians having a friendly (or not) competition of some sort.
Ironically, musicians actually compete more than most realize. They compete for a lead position within an orchestra, auditions to see who is the best fit and best player. They may compete for stage volume, recognition and egos can get out of hand. Bands compete for gigs or may try to upstage another band, Hendrix lit his guitar on fire to upstage The Who is just one example. "Battle of the Bands" is a real thing (even if it's a pay to play scam). And then there's the ruthless music industry. I still don't know who won the "Dueling Banjos" song.

Yeah, the search function around here is not all that good, but not really any worse than that of a lot of other forums search functions. Why can't web designers/IT folks figure it out?

True but at least it could have picked Benavent. Well I've been caught red handed. So here's the truth : I went on to read the 2-3 pages to check, then got bored with all the bassist quoted in the replies (not nice I know) and thought "I hope Benavent has been quoted" then used the search thread function, relying on technology to hide my wrongdoing...With Carlos Benavent instead of Carles Benavent, that's why
Well, if the posts in this thread had truly been about virtuoso players the thread would be a whole lot shorter than it is.

I don't know that I'd call him a virtuoso, but he's definitely very good at playing bass. Tom Scholz.
