We had a VW Rabbit that my parents bought brand new in '81. It was a diesel and they drove the life out of that thing, I think just shy of 300k miles when it breathed it's last black fumes.

I learned to drive stick shift in that car.

I sold those. I suppose you could call it "iconic" for that gas-deprived era. THe Diesel VW Rabbit with a 5-speed was the undisputed mileage champ in the US at the time.
