I sold those. I suppose you could call it "iconic" for that gas-deprived era. THe Diesel VW Rabbit with a 5-speed was the undisputed mileage champ in the US at the timne.

My biggest memory of that car was the "glow plugs" that you had to wait to engage when starting. At temps below zero we'd sit in that car for a few minutes waiting for the light to go off signifying it was ok to start. And than the entire car would shake so hard you couldn't use the mirrors until it warmed up and even'd out.

No block heater in those cars??

My diesel truck has glow plugs and the wait to start light, but also has a factory block heater you can plug in for extremely cold weather.

I honestly don't remember one, maybe there was and I didn't know about? But when we were at places like family at Christmas and things like that I remember dad piling the whole family in that VW. And when it was time to go home all of us sitting in that car freezing waiting for those.

We had a VW Rabbit that my parents bought brand new in '81. It was a diesel and they drove the life out of that thing, I think just shy of 300k miles when it breathed it's last black fumes.

I learned to drive stick shift in that car.

I learned to drive a stick on a diesel Dasher. Nice car, always ran!

There was no factory block heater in the Rabbit when delivered.

Note: VW Rabbit, not Mercedes. This explains it.

Many smart owners added some kind of coolant or block heater.

My dad had one of these his was a series 1 XJ6 He recentley died. been clearing out his house and came across a photo of him and his jag i took in Wales in the late 70s. strange seeing this as i found the photo today.
