I sold those. I suppose you could call it "iconic" for that gas-deprived era. THe Diesel VW Rabbit with a 5-speed was the undisputed mileage champ in the US at the timne.
My biggest memory of that car was the "glow plugs" that you had to wait to engage when starting. At temps below zero we'd sit in that car for a few minutes waiting for the light to go off signifying it was ok to start. And than the entire car would shake so hard you couldn't use the mirrors until it warmed up and even'd out.
