You see the main problem isn't the pickguard/scratchplate. The dark blue, which looks black and will do so at any gig just doesn't go well with Rosewood. The colours are too similar but not the same.

So you have a bigger problem on your hands. I agree with the OP that the bass is fugly. So my advice would be to find a Fender Precision Special in a colour you do like. Otherwise we're talking about repainting the body and that seems too drastic although you could have whatever colour you want!

Black bodies and Rosewood necks should be banned IMHO.

white or cream pickguard will be fine as you've got a rosewood fretboard.

Your current gold pickguard will become more sexy if it was paired with a neck with maple fretboard....

Was looking at this bass myself as it sounded like a floppin' beast when I tried it a few days ago. It exists in black as well and that's what I'll be getting if I'll get one. Much easier to make it look good pickguard-wise.

Hello there!

I am looking to buy my first Fender bass and I have found one that sounds incredible to me.

It is the Fender Deluxe Precision Bass Special.sparkles deep against a few Squiers and various Fenders and this one just sounded the best to me. I've had so much fun visiting the music store just to play this monster!

My only problem with it is that it is (in my opinion) a very ugly bass. I know that aesthetics aren't everything, and I still intend on buying it, but I was wondering what you guys think I could do pickguard-wise to make this bass look better. I like gold pickguards on certain basses, but it definitely doesn't look good with this metallic blue paint job. I've had it suggested to me by one of the sales guys at the music store to go for a vintage mint green pickguard, but I'm not sure how that will look. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think it looks great as is, but I think tortoise would be too dark, and a lot of solids seem bland - I'd tool around and look at a lot of pearloid shades.

I'd recommend you wait a month or two and see if it grows on you. Seriously, I think it looks fine as it is, but if I were to change it I'd choose a mint/black/mint 3-ply pickguard.

In before all the Tort-istas!. I'm partial to the cream-black-cream one on my 3 tone-burst P, but a white one might look nice, too. And there's always black, or a blue one for a 2-tone look..

I normally don't like tort, but it does look good on black p basses

Or go stealth with a black guard

I don't think it looks bad as-is personally. If you want to make it look bad, I specialize in that sort of thing.

I would keep it simple and go with solid white. I think that would really pop.
