I recently posted about acquiring a mid-late 1800's Tyrolean bass that has a very dark sound (acquisition is still in process). Even brand new Spiros do not sound bright or clanky at all.
I've been using a Full Circle on my Shen SB200 for almost 4 years now, and I've been happy with that pickup, but I'm ready to consider some other options for this new-to-me old bass. I definitely want a pickup with very good clarity. Despite the darkness of the Tyrolean, it sounds very clear and even. With my AMT mic, the notes just punch right through the mix with great body and definition. I want something like that, but more feed-back resistant than the mic.
I'm thinking the FC is still a good option (I'll get a new bridge on this bass, so I'll have it cut for the FC). Also thinking an Underwood might bring out more of the top end and string noise that the bass lacks. I'm afraid a Realist might be too dark for this bass, though I'm pretty sure it would capture the resonance of the top better than anything else. How about a Revolution Solo?
