Piezo-like treble on my j-bass

Hmmm okay guys.. I think I'm starting to get a better handle on this. It seems like I've been a bit picky about it I guess. However, I'm going to be changing the pickups really soon and perhaps I'll like the tone better then.

@dmusic148: the only reason up till this point that I always had my volumes only at 100% is because anything below 100% seemed too big of a dropoff, little bit too much. BUT, i will try it today! and thank you!

I think what I want to do is make some changes (like the pickups and maybe the strings) and come back to this thread and report and differences or improvements just for posterity

Just make up for it with gain at your amp like everybody else does. It's really not a problem. You're welcome.

well dudes, i did a mid-level kinda upgrade and i put fender MIM j-bass pickups in it and im definitely whole lot happier with how they sound. something i noticed about cheaper pickups (er, at least the classic vibe series j's), they seem somewhat devoid of some mids and the highs have that brittleness i was talking about

much much much better with the actual fender pickups. more middy and wooly/warm and those highs are definitely more tame than the other set. im happy!

SO I just wanted to thank everyone who replied and helped me out! turns out i was just being a little picky, forgive me!!

Cheaper pickups tend to have less wire in them because copper is expensive. Generally, less turns of wire = more highs AND lows, less midrange. More turns = opposite. That's why 'hot' or 'overwound' pickups are usually mid heavy and light everywhere else.
