Pimp Yo State:

Fellow, TBers I've had a bellyful of my state. It a combination of many, many things but the straw that is breaking this camel's back was paying $3.35 a gallon for gas today.

At $80.40 per tankful, every four days that's $623.10 per month on my commute.

We'll never be able to afford more than our townhome unless we want to move to Palmdale and that is NOT going to happen.

So, tell me about the places you live.

1) Nightlife is not important.
2) In fact it can be down-right dull as far as I'm concerned.
3) We have a three-year-old daughter. I'd like for her to grow up rural.
4) To avoid any politics, I'll just say that "Old-Fashioned" and traditional neighborhoods/states are fine and dandy by me.
5) I hate the wind. On second thought, I loathe it.
6) Snow would be nice, just not 8 feet of it in 2 hours.
7) Fireflies are a huge plus.
9) Off-road motorcycles, snowmobiling & 4x4ing is a MUST.

Please do not turn this into a "Your state sucks" thread, I'm really looking for honest opinions.

Edit: 8) Good schools for the kidlet cuz I dun learnt nuthin, obviously!

Missouri:

1)Nightlife - Maybe in Saint Louis or Kansas City. Even then, not much to speak of.
2)Dull - Check.
3)Rural - Check.
4)Old-Fashioned - Kinda, moreso in the rural areas.
5)Wind - Not too windy
6)Snow - We tend to get a fair amount of snow, but the apocolyptic levels are few and far between.
7)Fireflies - Check.
8)???
9)Off roading thingies - I see more of this in the rural areas. We get snow, but I usually don't see many snow mobiles out. I live in a more urban area though.

1) Utah... nightlife? :D Actually, Salt Lake has quite bit of nightlife. It's just a bit more subdued.
2) Utah... exciting? :D
3) 99% of Utah is empty space. Rural enough for you? :)
4) When you think of "traditional" values, doesn't that just scream "UTAH?"
5) Wind? Maybe enough to fly a kite every once in a while.
6) Salt Lake City... ten ski resorts within an hour of my house, though the valley tends to not get more than 6" at a time. In the spring, I can ski/snowboard in the morning, then mountain bike in the afternoon. Sweet... :)
7) Sorry... no fireflies... :( No termites or fleas, either .... :)
8) What happened to 8????????
9) There's so much 4x4, snowmobile, motorcycle stuff going on here, it's not funny. Plus, we have stuff like Arches, Zion, Bryce Canyon, etc. Lots of fishing/hunting if you're into that, too. Outdoorsman's paradise.

I've lived here since '68. I'm not really planning to move away anytime soon.

Southern California.

1) The beach is nice
2) Lots of hawt asian chicks (Back me up here Maki)
3) Lots of good looking girls at the beach
4) lots of fake people :hmm:
5) Clothing = status :hmm:
6) Appearance = Crucial :hmm:
7) Lots of clubs and nightlife
8) Good conditions outside (usually)
9) Lots of good ocean fishing, from inshore to back island Marlin fishing
10) lots of good acts to see play live in LA.

Here the price on gas mostly costs between €1,10 and €1,40 per liter. I usually fill up with 50 litres one or two times a month. That is in average about 100 €/month for me, but I only have a 9 minute drive to my work... My car drinks about 8-9 liter/100 km, and it has a 2,0 l engine.

Let's see... the price right now is €1,30 /liter which means €4,92 per gallon which means about 6,40 USD per gallon... Be happy that you don't live here....

Wow, guys thanks for the rapid responses!

No worries Steve, Rakie's post contained a lot of reasons for our departure.

ADBassman - Missouri has been on the "short list" for a long time. Do you know much about Marceline, MO?

Atoz - Utah is also a serious consideration. I was thinking SW area so's not to be too far from Vegas. How's the housing market up that-a-way?

Ibnz- Hey there neighbor! This market must have been kind to you I'm guessing.

Keep 'em coming folks.

I have to drive all over SoCal for my job, and I do get reimbursed for mileage, but still I spend a small fortune on gas.

I'm also fed up with Kalifornia, can't see myself living here more than 2 or 3 more years, so I be watching this thread for ideas on where to move too. ;)

Well, im a young guy, i buy the fad clothing, and the shirts that say catchy or funny things, I go to the clubs, I go to the bars, I meet people and blah blah...

So it suits me... There's always something to do, or see. The things I don't like are the Fake people, but id be lying if I said I didn't fit in with my age group. I usually win best dressed metal head tho... hahah. The city and night life are everything to me... Its 2:30am for me and the night is young, unfortunately this night I decided to stay home.

But when I get your age, settle down, look for a wife and all that... I wouldn't want to be here... Priorities in life change as you age, its just how it is... I love nice peaceful towns, small places and such... But I love going out for now.

How about PA? You could still consider it one of the 'free' states.

I live north of Pittsburgh, lazy small town living but commute there for work. Our kids still sing real Christmas songs at school (not winter festival songs), our fire department has a 50+ gun raffle every fall and advertises it with a big banner above Main Street, and when the schools have the kids do pictorals of the food chain well over half of them have a picture of a hunter with a *gasp* gun without them getting expelled!

Schools are closed down on the first day of deer season.

Nightlife... if you want to go to a small bar on the weekends, maybe karaoke, or play in a band to 75-150 people there's plenty to do, or drive to Pittsburgh if you want to go for the bigger stuff.

Land is relatively cheap. I have a big modular with basement/2 stall garage on an acre for $110k.

Depending on what you do for a living, I could possibly

Lots of fireflies in the summertime.

Wind? Breezy a lot of the time, only gets windy during bad storms for the most part.

Snow... get a couple good dumps of snow a year. Enough that you're ready for it to go away, but you still want to take advantage of it when it's there so you can sled ride with your kids cause it might not be there next week. Good sled riding hills too!

Offroading, etc. depends on what you work out with your neighbors... you shouldn't trespass anyways, right? I know people find places to do it though. However, if you want to hunt, there's plenty of state game lands available.

If you want any of the political climate, PM me.

Well, OctoberMoon, I see ADbassman beat me to it on Missouri! I'm in SW Missouri, near Springfield, and will second everything, but add that here we have several lakes within easy driving distance and yesterday gas was $2.65 a gallon. I work in construction (painting- new and existing homes) and know we have had a lot of California transplants move here. You can sell your house, move here, buy a new house, and have enough money left over to not work for a while if you wanted. Do a little checking on the 'net for prices, 'cause as with everything, it depends on what you want, but I can assure you, the CA folks who move here seem pretty happy. In Springfield, there is a bit of oversupply currently on new homes built on speculation, so it's a buyers market.

I caught your #8 question. Most schools here are great, though of course it depends on the town as to class sizes. Gang problems are minimal, although a few schools have an undercurrent of activity.

We would be glad to have you! PM me if there are any questions I might be able to help you with.

You loathe wind?!

I would kill to have California Wind!

Here in Canada, it can be -5 Celcius. which is fine in the winter, it's actually quite warm.
But with the wind chill, it can drop to -30. Easily. And don't even get me started on how cold it gets during the night.

Springfield, Il

1) Nightlife is not important.
Good, we don't have ANY. Our bars and 'clubs' are closing due to the smoking ban and one of the last smoking bars is not allowed to have live music.

2) In fact it can be down-right dull as far as I'm concerned.
Check.

3) We have a three-year-old daughter. I'd like for her to grow up rural.
How's a corn field?

4) To avoid any politics, I'll just say that "Old-Fashioned" and traditional neighborhoods/states are fine and dandy by me.
Racial relations have been a problem here since the dawn of time We're the reason that they had to form the NAACP.

5) I hate the wind. On second thought, I loathe it.
Well, not much wind here.

6) Snow would be nice, just not 8 feet of it in 2 hours.
hmmm, sometimes it dumps pretty good.

7) Fireflies are a huge plus.
Yes - we have these.

9) Off-road motorcycles, snowmobiling & 4x4ing is a MUST.
and these. At 3 in the morning, when you're trying to sleep.

as much as I'd love to have you as a neighbor, this isn't where you want to be.
