Pimp Yo State:

Ever consider Southern Maine?

1) Nightlife is not important.

Portland isn't too bad. Not great, but there's stuff to do.

2) In fact it can be down-right dull as far as I'm concerned.

Life is what you make of it up here. You can make it exciting, or you can make it dull. Your choice.

3) We have a three-year-old daughter. I'd like for her to grow up rural.

Go a little further up North and you'll know what rural REALLY means. There are some schools in Northern Maine where you'll see kids walking into class wearing full hunting gear and still have a hunting knife in their belt because they went hunting right before school.

However, Southern Maine might be more what you're looking for. Suburban with a touch of rural to it, if that makes sense. For example, I can drive five minutes from my house (dead center of a nice suburban town) and be surrounded by farmland.

4) To avoid any politics, I'll just say that "Old-Fashioned" and traditional neighborhoods/states are fine and dandy by me.

PM me for details if you're interested. It heavily depends on the area you're in, though.

5) I hate the wind. On second thought, I loathe it.

You'll be fine here.

6) Snow would be nice, just not 8 feet of it in 2 hours.

We get a lot of it up here, so that's something you would have to deal with.

7) Fireflies are a huge plus.

Check.

9) Off-road motorcycles, snowmobiling & 4x4ing is a MUST.

Oh yeah, we've got PLENTY of that.

Oh, and the lobster here is FANTASTIC.

Beautiful scenery, as well. Check it out (not my website, just some awesome pictures):

Racial relations have been a problem here since the dawn of time We're the reason that they had to form the NAACP.

Point of clarity - I was referring to Liberal Vs. Conservative. I don't care what color you are as long as you're LEGAL. :)

Thanks for all the great information, guys!

Any folks from Wyoming or Kentucky have some input for a feller?

Don't come to Maryland. It smells bad (in places) and has lots of pesticide pollution (on the eastern shore). And the traffic in the major metropolitan areas is as bad as anywhere else in the country.

In truth, I really love living between Baltimore, Annapolis, Wash DC, No. VA... plenty of bar gigs scattered around. But really, it's getting so damn crowded. Stay where you are, please. :p

Morgantown West VA.
It is everything you described, but it is also under 90 minutes from Pittsburgh if you want any big city stuff like sports. Farm country is moments away, big university in town, too. Only thing it might lack from your list is snow mobile coverage, but they do get over 3ft of snow a season so it wouldn't rot in the shed.

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised another Mainer beat me to the punch here. Where abouts are you? I lived in Portland for several years while attending USM. Spent a lot of time in Westbrook and Windham.

So, my take on the matter at hand if basically an echo of everything Scarlet Fire said. I'm inclined to suggest the Midcoast area, though, as that's where I originally hail from :) However, the importance of having cultural variety/nightlife/things to can do should be inversely related to your distance from Portland.

Maine is a beautiful state, just be prepared to get payed less and pay more in taxes

I'm actually from Yarmouth, which is about 20 minutes from Portland. Nice little town (if not a bit high-strung).

ADBassman - Missouri has been on the "short list" for a long time. Do you know much about Marceline, MO?

Never heard of the town, but I'll look it up on google real quick. Ah, I see that's a just a little ways north of Columbia (where I live). Well, if you're looking to live the middle of nowhere, then it should be right up your alley. Mostly farms and whatnot up there.

How about this, I trade you my state for yours. I would certianly rather live in California, but that comes from living in Missouri all my life.

Aren't the winters exceptionally long and cold with huge amounts of snow?

See, I'd be okay with this, the wife hates the cold however.

Nah, not in the southern part of the state, say in the Milwaukee/Madison area. It varies from winter to winter, and it can get cold, but nothing incredibly devastating.

Don't get me wrong - we have winter. But it's no worse than Chicago or Indianapolis. Get further north to Minnesota, and then you get some winters.

The snow varies from year to year, and you'll occasionally get dumped on. Whatever we get, though, Michigan gets five times as much. :D Hooray for "lake effect snow"!

Wow, guys thanks for the rapid responses!
..

Atoz - Utah is also a serious consideration. I was thinking SW area so's not to be too far from Vegas. How's the housing market up that-a-way?

Housing's not as cheap around here (Salt Lake City) as you might find elsewhere, but it's a bit less than SoCal. Depending on where you live in town, a 2000 sq. ft. house might cost between $150 - $275K. This is a very rough guess, mind you.

Representin' Massachusetts, yo.

1) Nightlife is not important.
Well, most of the nightlife is in Boston. They do have some nice live-music venues throughout the state, but most of the bands are either punk or hardcore/metalcore.

2) In fact it can be down-right dull as far as I'm concerned.
I wouldn't call it dull, but it isn't New York or LA.

3) We have a three-year-old daughter. I'd like for her to grow up rural.
You can find cows pretty much everywhere in western MA except Springfield and Holyoke. That said, most of the surrounding towns like Ludlow, Agawam, and East Longmeadow are fairly "high class." Cost of living up here is pretty expensive anyway, though, from what I hear.

4) To avoid any politics, I'll just say that "Old-Fashioned" and traditional neighborhoods/states are fine and dandy by me.
We tend to vote Democrat, but New England is generally considered to be more conservative than other "liberal" areas.

5) I hate the wind. On second thought, I loathe it.
The eastern states are generally the least windy of all the states, unless you live by the coast or in the mountains.

6) Snow would be nice, just not 8 feet of it in 2 hours.
We haven't had much in terms of snow lately, but New England winters can be brutal. I haven't seen Massachusetts (not Springfield, at least) get more than a few feet.

7) Fireflies are a huge plus.
Not in Springfield (although my neighborhood has lots of rabbits). Maybe in the smaller towns.

8) Good schools for the kidlet cuz I dun learnt nuthin, obviously!
We rank second among all states for best education.

9) Off-road motorcycles, snowmobiling & 4x4ing is a MUST.
If you get snow, snowmobiling is a definite. 4x4 and off-road motorcycles, I'm not sure, but I'd be willing to bet there's some good spots for it in the more rural towns.

Southern Indiana meets all your needs except snowmobiling which can still happen but it is rare

It's flat here , compared to Cali .

Hot in the summer , nice in the fall , cold in the winter , nice in the spring , HEY we have seasons!!

I live 5 min. from the ohio river if you like boating .

We are less than 3 hours away from multiple larger cities , such as Nashville , St louis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis ETC... . we have an airport as well.

The economy is booming here

We have earthquakes ( only minor ones so far ) , thunder storms, and tornadoes.

We have lots of fireflies .

Crime is low.

Housing is cheap.

lots to do here including nightlife

we have 4 music stores, 3 local and one GC

I could go on all night.

I get $100.00 for bringing someone in and I have no friends , move here!!
