Pino’s playing on Barely Breathing

For years I didn’t know who the bassist was who did this splendid groove on Duncan Sheik’s tune. In the early 2000s I learned it was Pino Palladino. Also,I know he was on a lot of other releases too, but I really dig this one. I can’t get enough of it.

Duncan Sheik never captured chart success like this again, but he went on to be a successful composer and won a Tony award in 2007.

Yeah. That was Duncan’s chart high water mark. The rest of his debut was so so. Glad he went on and achieved other successes.

Oh man, I revisited this one recently and yeah, the song and Pino's line are fantastic. Great bridge on this one!

I went through some live performances and there's one from an awards show that they just absolutely crush - him and his band were tight (and the bass player nailed Pino's line note for note)

Duncan is one of my favorite artists. That was a great bassline in one song, but it's kind of like listening to Joni Mitchell because of Big Yellow Taxi. Yeah, it's one big "hit" but SO MUCH of the rest of the artist's catalog is at least as good as the hit, if not BETTER. "Humming" from 1998 is a MASTERFUL album, and probably one of my top 10 albums of all time.

I cannot think of a single Pino line that I have not loved in some way. Absolute monster of a player and always tasteful and musical.

Checking out “Wishful Thinking” now, from Great Expectations soundtrack. Not Pino acc to discogs, but nice sounding fretless bass on it regardless.

Good song. I remember that song and others from good bands like Toad The Wet Sprocket were in some setlists in the mid-90's. Kinda right before Pino started his change over to P-bass with flats for sessions.

Awesome. I discovered some unknown (to me at the time) Pino recordings on several tunes from Julia Fordham’s Porcelain.
Amazing players all over that album

Same here, on all counts. Unfortunately, that band lasted only a year, but we played lots of cool material that I didn't know before, including Barely Breathing.

Your band lasted a lot longer than the one I was in that did "Barely Breathing".
