Yes he's incredible.

He's carved his own niche.

He's a GIANT, both musically and physically, and IMO is easily, EASILY... the best rock/pop/soul/R&B electric bassist to have come out of the British Isles [sorry Entwistle and McCartney fans - don't go getting your knickers in a twist]

It was as if fate destined both he and the fretless stingray to come together, much as it did Jaco and the bass of doom, and JJ and the funk machine - well... that's the way I feel anyway. Suffice to say his playing moves me like that of only a few others.

Holy freakin crap. I've never seen a band get carried by a bass player like that. Damn.

Mh... my phone speaker probably is not the best but even with headphones I feel that the overall mix is not of very good quality ... anyway I’m not a particular fan of PP and got the impression that the thread is just for PP fans so you can ignore my previous posts if you wish

I’d also add Richard (Rick) Laird (not entirely UK but substantially enough ...) if you allow me, whose origin and skills the majority of TBers, who posted on this thread, would likely ignore ...

If you are interested in UK-based bass players and pickups you could just have a look at the two LPs from Laird with great pianist Tom Grant (I think they are now sold together for Timeless ... Soft Focus and Mystified are the names) .. on those albums Laird plays what I believe or seems to be a Carl Thompson bass ... the pickups sound is one of the most potent electric bass sound I’ve heard ... I wonder which pickups were installed on that bass ...

I bought the 12" of that when it first came out (still have it) solely for that bassline.

Any idea what bass he's playing up in that vid?

I first heard him on Gary Numan's 1982 'I, Assassin'. That album was dominated by Pino's playing and it was prescient of Numan to utilise him. I wore the heads on on my Walkman with a cassette of that album. The track 'Music for Chameleons'' bassline was eventually immortalised by Alan Partridge's 'air bass' episode.

The bass is barely audible in the video where he plays the Precision ... does this serve as a confirmation of the Stingray like basses being the best in cutting through the mix?

You may need some better speakers??? The bass is way up in the mix for me even through my Panasonic Ear Buds.

Nah... the band’s sound is a bad paste
