Pino on SNL W/D'Angelo

This was great

A buddy stopped by after a gig & I was screaming/laughing

These 'entertainers' get fat and then discover MUSIC - lame guitar, lame vocals, lame tune but.....

There's Pino - buddy (guitard) doesn't get it - I say the higheSt paid guy on stage is the geezer bassist

I can hear the conversation between D'A & his Mgr

D'A: I need the baddest bassist available
Agent: That would be PP and it will cost $xx,xxx
D'A: I don't care how much it cost get it done

hehe - laughing all the way to the bank

D'Angelo and Pino have worked together for years and D'Angelo is pretty widely regarded as a great musician, even before he "got fat" which isn't exactly what is call him.

Music is a team sport, Pino's a team player. His phone's ringing. Bandleaders appreciate his concept.

Exactly it's a job - a very good one and he doesn't need to do it if he's not inclined

To make sure I wasn't talking out my arse I went & listened to some other D'Angelo stuff - see what's up

I understand the interest as it's not your typical beats - in all honesty there are some interesting parts - even real playing - but it's layered with programmed drums and discombobulated over produced layering - I guess if it's got layers, it must be good after years of total garbage but meh

Actually, the drums were played by a real drummer in the studio, as was every instrument. All recordings were analog.

I love drummers who try to sound like a machine - awesome - put it on vinyl that will make it even greater music

I'm gonna repeat what I initially said - these guys 'discovered' MUSIC and then decided tgey wanted to play it

If those are all legit players it's extremely amateurish work - well produced but lounge level

My guess is that, if all you've ever heard is computer music this is truly novel - real players, analog recording - doesn't make it quality music - we'll see if anyone remembers D'Angelo in 20 yrs

Picture from that old thread.

I think that Pino gets lost in the mix live because he's using flatwounds (or tapewounds, in this case). And this bass didn't sound any better to me that a normal P-Bass. No growl to be found.

I thought the same when he played with the John Mayer trio. . . I wished he was using rounds so I can hear more of he was doing and provide some grit and clarity. But maybe he's intentionally wanting to get lost in the mix and provide nothing but pillowy support. . .

Those are T-bird pickups - and it's the same bass he used w/ D'Angelo on SNL without a doubt. I remember seeing him use this bass with The Who at some point. Superbowl? Heck if I remember....

Condescension layered on ignorance isn't a good look.

Well aware of Questlove - seems like a great guy funny sincere and loves music

Pedestrian drummer (so so band) - can you explain why he has a percussionist for example?

Sorry
