Double Bass Pirastro Perpetuals with Stark G & D ... beyond awesome

I was a hardcore Evah Pirazzi consumer for 10+ years but I was starting to become disenchanted with the "hybrid" nature of them ... pizz was OK but a little dull; arco was OK but still a tad too scratchy. Then ... the clouds parted and Perpetuals became available. Halleluiah and by Jove, they nailed it: articulate, dark enough, bright enough and definitely projecting beautifully. But the G & D were *still* a bit too scratchy under the bow. Well ... Pirastro listened to their customers and fattened up the G & D strings (hence Stark) and dialed back some of the brightness that now makes them the PERFECT set of strings (at least for me)! No need to put strings together from two (or more) sets ... one stop shopping. I'm astounded by how good these strings perform and how fluid my playing is allowed to be ... love, love, love them. Strongly recommend them to anyone looking for a great "hybrid" set.

This is what I have, with Perpetual D and an Oliv G. The Perp kinda bridges the Spiros and Oliv; its slightly duller than the former, and brighter than the latter. I think I’d like it better if it wasn’t next to the Spiros. Because I want it to sound like a Spiro, lol.

Agreed. I've got a Perp A on my other bass bridging a Spiro Stark E to plain gut D/G - works really nicely, much more 'gut-like' than any Spirocore A in tone and feel. Jury is still out for me in terms of longevity, though. I am going to try to get 10+ years out of both these setups if I can.

I actually have the Ischell C3 permanently on my bass along with the KNA DB-1 Piezo. However, in boomy rooms such as this one I find I get a cleaner sound using mostly piezo (yeah, I know, sacrilege - but that's just how it is).

Ok, I give up. I ordered stark perps.

Last weeks rage was to buy Temperas, but now I had the opportunity to try them. Nothing for me!! Saved me a lot, though.

Curious to hear what you think of the Perpetual Starks when you string up and get them worked-in ...

I'm thinking of trying the perp stark G on top of spiro weichs. How is the stark G tension compared to spiro weichs? I've been using spiros with an obligato G for a long time but might want an even darker G. I've had the regular perps and ended up prefering an obligato G.

Which weichs do you have? On a 106 cm mensur: Spiro 4/4W: 25,1kg, 3/4W: 28,5kg, Perpetual stark: 26,9kg
