We released our album August 21st, by today (27th) the longest track (20 minutes) is up on Daily Motion as a free video! At least the poster offered to take it down if we feel copyright is "affected"...

Is this just how it is now? I mean why would anyone pirate an obscure prog band from Cornwall ffs?

On the plus side we got our first bad review yesterday, so I feel acknowledged :)

At least someone liked your song enough to do that.
Is it a good video?
Maybe the guy just saved you a fortune in production costs?

No the video is just 4 stills converted to video to match the track length. I just can't decide if I think the whole thing is flattery or theft... maybe if it leads to a good gig or a couple of CD or Digital sales it's a good thing, probably. Nice just to be noticed I guess :)

Having your music up on Youtube and similar platforms sooner or later is something to be expected nowadays, I think. Take it as a sign of flattery - as with all music, the real fans will proceed to buy your music, and you don't need to particularly care for the rest. They wouldn't come to a show anyway.

Now, about bad reviews... Bebop and free jazz were trashed in magazine reviews back in the day too, so what should we take away from that?

Got a link for us?

I like long and boring. I'm in a progressive doom band, we like to torture people with slow tempos instead.

I'm liking what I hear so far, any chance of you ever playing on mainland Europe?

We are thinking of it, we were on progalley.eu last night which was fun... need to hook in to some of the prog festivals next year. Prog seems to be far more popular on mainland Europe than in the UK.

I like the sound of progressive doom, nice contranym :)

it is a double edged sword. if your video gets on a channel with lots of followers then you'll get some exposure. at the same time 99.9% of people will stop there and not buy your music.

our last album was posted to a popular YT channel. 33,000 plays in 5 months. total sales that we can attribute to those plays...2

I don't know much about marketing, but if it's just one song, I'd think it useful exposure, so long as you're given credit and maybe a link to where people might buy your stuff. People so rarely actually purchase music these days- giving them a chance to hear the song, vibe with it, and then decide they want more is probably more helpful than harmful.

Plus, it's DailyMotion, YouTube's degenerate cousin. A person can't play it in their car/ while working out/ otherwise alongside the rest of their music without making some very specific efforts, so I think if they really like it, they aren't going to leave it at that.

On YouTube, at least, there are ways you can provide an audio fingerprint of the track, claim it and either demand it be taken down, or you can ask YouTube to monetize it by placing ads, and the revenue will come to you. I don't know the exact details, but a record label I used to work for had someone who spent a lot of time doing this sort of thing when our content would wind up online.

I try not to get too bent out of shape about it. I mean really Spotify doesn't pay us jack either. My band has a lot of new fans in Brazil that found our stuff online. We're in NC and don't have the means to go play Brazil and we're not coming out of pocket to ship CDs there so it's all good. The more annoying thing to me is when people I personally know in my area don't want to Pay for our music. We released a new album about 10 days ago. I'm more concerned about reaching new people than how many are paying for it. I mean hell I had a regular job yesterday and I was playing music then. It's nice to make some money but it's not the reason I play. We walked out of the club with over $600 Friday night. Not foo fighters or Metallica numbers by any means but I'm not complaining. We pretty much plan on making music videos for every song on this album anyways. Albums been out for ten days and we already have two knocked out.

I'll refer to Todd Rundgren on this:

t's so perpetual, it's anywhere
Everything's virtual, it's light as air
It's so ephemeral, like it's not there
Need something I can hold
Or maybe something I can wear

Buy my T
Buy my hoodie
You need a souvenir
We got your cotton goodies
I know my limits
I give until I hurt
You can bootleg the music
But you have to buy a shirt

I used to stand in line to buy my shred
I get it from inside my phone instead
If it's a new design, I'll spend the bread
Though I don't own your vinyl
I got your branding on my head

Come on
Buy my T
My cap is fine
If we sell out, you can find
Everything online
We got all sizes
We got 5 X large
That's a limited edition
And will that be cash or charge?

It seems to me if you are in a band now unless you've signed a 360 deal then you are going to make your money off merch.

Rev J

And you have some nice artwork there on the CDs - but no other merch (listed on bandcamp, anyway) - put those album covers (or derivative works) on some shirts, phone cases, USB thumb drives, sports bras, yoga pants, mini-skirts.....being sure to pay your visual artist appropriately, of course. Evidently your keyboard/guitar/vocals gal.

I have not yet sat and listened to the whole thing, but what was there on bandcamp to listen to sounded good for as long as I did.
