I was thinking more about ergonomics, but if a J-body isn’t a deal breaker…Hmm, hadn’t thought about that. I would say no. I’m more concerned w tone than aesthetics.
…then if you’re willing to, you could jave one of your Jazzes modified into a P/J with a little routing. I did exactly that to a Mighty Mite body using a Reggie Hamilton Jazz pickguard as a template.I have a Jazz and a few Jazz like basses too so I can get the J sound from a j or j like bass…
Same pup. Just mounted different. I use that config in some of my builds.Silly question, is a reverse P setup the same pickup just mounted differently?
When shopping for replacements, the pickups are the same?
That’s interesting.Never had a PJ but I do have a double P.

This is interesting. I don’t think I have anything w H-buckers so I could consider a ph. I have a few jazz/jazz variants.PH's are better
This, if you can find one.I’ve got a few basses in my Arsenal but the one thing that’s missing is; wait for it, wait for it…. A P Bass!
So… I don’t really want a modern P so if I get anything it will be a PJ. I’m not a big fan of production brands but I could be swayed, the closest I have to a production instrument is a KSD ProtoJ. Looking forward to your suggestions.

I may swap electronics, bridges etc but I don’t think I could make structural modifications to the body. This worked for me !!!View attachment 4752683
build one?...depending on your pickup/preamp preference. You could have something killer.
pulling together the right parts and assembling them into the perfect playing ax that you want is, IMO/IME, the best way to get a custom FSO.

I recently picked an old Ibanez EXB504 with a reverse P. I’m looking forward to recording with it.I have four PJ basses but two are Reverse PJ.......P and Reverse P are subtleties, and just A/B-ing by themselves I don't hear much..Where I notice the difference is either in the context of the band or on a recording: The Reverse P seems to have more of an even tone color distribution and has a slightly more aggressive quality that I prefer......This is my 1989 MIJ Fender Power Jazz Bass Special and its one of my current favorite instruments and it has the Reverse P

For all you pj players…
Do you play both pickups primarily or one or the other?
When do you split them and why?
I think the responses may have me leaning towards buying a vintage p but not sure just yet…
