One of the issues I've read about is darkening of the tone. If I'm removing the volume pot that should help? I than have the choice of grounding the blend or not?

I have used a P/J set up VBT since '03 and really like the way it sounds and functions. It is very handy IMHO to be able to adjust master volume or switch between pups with a single knob for each of the separate functions. I've also set up a Jazz with VBT controls and like the way it functions. Years ago I had a Yamaha BB series P/J with V/T/3way switch. It made pup changes fast, but lacked the subtleties of the blend control equipped basses. Personally if I were to eliminate any control knob on a bass it would be the tone control, I use it the least. I've alsways thought the G&L SB2 should be set up V/B not V/V. Guess I just like the blend option. YMMV
All good mate, neither am I. I'll be curious to hear how it ends up as it's not a wiring that I've tried in this passive PJ (have had a blend in a active Ibanez PJ in the past). Keep us posted.
Over a number of years I've gotten used to VVT with my jazz basses. The downside to me is you can't control the volume without upsetting the balance for that reason I've never relied on a volume control. Also the effect of slightly rolling off one pickup with a 250k audio taper pot is effectively soling it. Again not a problem with a jazz for me but being able to be more subtle with pulling some of the J into the P in a PJ is something I want, which eliminates the 3 way switch as an initial option.
This is a bit of an experiment so at first outside of routing for the J pickup I don't want additional routes in the cavity or holes in the pickguard. If down the road I feel 3 knobs or a switch is necessary I can add it. So initially I want to exhaust the option available with the two knob setup.
I currently have a av64 jazz and a av57 P. I recently sold my hotrod PJ
On its way to me is another 57P, a fralin PJ set with a 5% overwound J. A 250k noble blend pot and a CTS 250k tone with .047 orange drop cap. I am going have the J routed for 70s spacing.
The control layout is an easy change if I'm not 100% on it!

Yea, what would we call it? The 2010's J placement. I wrote to Pat regarding it and.....
"The J pickup is mounted directly under a harmonic point that I found right at the base of the pickguard. My theory is that with the J pickup as close to the P as it is it doesn't quite get the bite that a typical PJ bridge pickup does but it does get more of the midrange that's associated with a Pbass."
His theory holds true so far. Not as much variation between the pups - it has a 3 way pickup selector - subtle variations and very P sounding. I like it. The J is very full and useful on it's own.

Hand-picked plank of alder, made into a 3-piece body. Inca silver with Nitro finish (no poly undercoat). Matching headstock.
Warmoth slim-taper maple 21 fret P neck. Vintage size stainless steel frets, 12 inch radius, Ebony board, Hipshot Ultralites with a D-tuner. Graphite rods, Graphite nut, dressed by Justin Kennedy (ModulusAcacia on TB). Edges rolled and frets dressed polished by Scott. Tung oil finish on back.
Black pearloid guard, CTS pots (VVT) with orange drop .047 cap. Hipshot bridge, Dunlop straplocks, Aguilar P/J pup set. Strung with GHS B-52 Boomers in balanced tension gauge.
