Noon question: Based on the pics here, seems like most people have a P, then add the bridge pup. Doesn't that mean you have to refinish the bass to hide the marks from routing and sanding the new route? I started with a J, so the new route would be concealed by a custom designed pkckguard. Or is mine really a JP?

Likely most of these started life as a PJ, though there are some mods. I suppose a good woodworker/luthier could do it without a refinish.

A good sharp router bit and a template are all that's really needed--no refinish necessary if done carefully.

This is a very thick and brittle finish, probably as bad as it gets if you try to hide a chip or scratch.

No problem with a sharp bit and a steady grip.

All the best,

Shane

The body of mine started life as a US '57 reissue P. Had a luthier route it for the J and he did a great job. No marks in the nitro finish, as stated above with a decent sharp router it should turn out ok.

You can see in my photo the J was added, it wasnt great but oh well. 5 feet back and no one notices, I have seen worse.

Obviously if I did it I would have done a better job, but I didnt.
