PJ hum issue

Hey folks. I've got a parts PJ that I play a lot. Pups are Fender '62 split and a SD Jazz bridge pup. I am noticing a fairly strong hum from the Precision pup. Even with the vol all the way down. Seems to lessen a bit when I touch the jack plate, but still there. Quiet at full vol. This has been professionally soldered. My American P is quiet as a mouse. Any ideas? Thanks for any responses. Bob

"When I had a P/J bass I put a "noiseless" J pickup in it to stop the hum I was getting."

This hum seems to come from the split P pup. With the J pup off at zero vol. the P pup hums unless its vol is full on. Wierd. Never noticed before and I've been playing this bass for two yrs. Gig with it all the time too.

Will a J pickup not void the hum-cancelling properties of a P pickup, or at least one half of a pickup? I would try and match manufacturers, and even lines of pickups that are known to work in a PJ configuration.

If it is humming with the volume down then that suggests a general goof with the ground-side of the circuit in the bass.

I appreciate the replies. I've put the bass back together and am going to check this hum out at other places besides my home. Maybe just something about this bass and my home that I have not noticed before. I was playing it last night and I think it was pretty quiet. Maybe no issues other than my own. I need to investigate further. Until then, gonna play the thing.

Intersting thread.
Ive had the same Fender pup in two P basses over the past few years. I put it in my Squier VM PJ recently and got pretty much the same thing. I tried reversing the wires but it made no difference. At the time the bridge pup was a stock single coil.
I took the Fender out and put it back in my CV and its been fine.
I put the Fralin i had in the CV in the PJ and that too worked perfectly.
I never did get to the bottom of this.
