Played a cheap bass through an ampeg CL-300, 8x10

You really can't, IMO. The "magic" of this combo (even at low volumes) is the tone of the all tube head and the huge heft and thickness offered by 8 - 10" speakers. Can't totally reproduce that with lesser gear.

Absolute reproduction is more or less impossible, but a reasonable facsimile is certainly doable. As long as one understand that, IMO, I don't see why we shouldn't try.

Ampeg PF-50T into a PF-112hlf. I can't say it's identical to an SVT/810e, but it's the closest you will get for bedroom application. You could also sub out the PF-20T for the 50T...less wattage and a more simple EQ, but is cheaper and sounds great, too.

EDIT: The V4B and PF212av is also an awesome smaller combination, but the PF-50T sounds about identical to the V4B and will save you some jack.

I don't dispute that.

But IME much of what I like about a SVT/8x10 combo is the 8x10 part of the equation, even at low volumes. The combination of many drivers within the large sealed enclosure creates a coupling in the low end and low mids that cannot be obtained from fewer drivers and smaller enclosures.

I will disclose that I've never owned an SVT/810 rig, but have played many in rehearsal rooms and as provided backline. And there is nothing quite like that combo. I've never done a side by side comparison of big cab vs. small cab, but base my opinion on playing many different rigs over the years.

I bet if we did a head to head test of SVT+210AV, SVT+212AV and SVT+810AV all set at the same low/moderate SPL that the consensus would be a preference for the big cab. Who wants to test it out? :)
