They're nice basses, but they are not all that Ric like other than the shape.
Of course they're RIC-like, since they're made by Rickenbacker.
You're probably meaning they don't sound like a 4003, but they do, a 4003 on steroids

Lots of great basses out there, but only Ric 4003's and 4001's sound like that. And the Ric 4004 DOESN'T sound like that.
Pretty sure the bass pickup is in a different location between the 4004 and 4003, and they are humbuckers vs. single-coil, and the 4004 doesn't have the "Ric-tone" high-pass filter on the bridge pickup. Very different sounding.
And why you would discount a bass because it varies from another bass by the same company eludes me.
KBD comes into EVERY THREAD about 4003s and starts this.
Neither did the 4003 for twenty years.Pretty sure the bass pickup is in a different location between the 4004 and 4003, and they are humbuckers vs. single-coil, and the 4004 doesn't have the "Ric-tone" high-pass filter on the bridge pickup. Very different sounding.

Is that your #1 in your avatar? Love the cream and black binding/hardware. More pix?
There is no single "Ric tone."Lots of great basses out there, but only Ric 4003's and 4001's sound like that. And the Ric 4004 DOESN'T sound like that.
That was my 1st 5 string bass back in 2001 ... I wish I had kept that one ...
This is a 1989 4003s5 ... the "binding" is actually tape

You and KBD just went on mine.Indeed it is. Moreover, the title of this thread would suggest OP has little experience with the brand and thus might well benefit from your heads up about the existence of another model.
Keep up the good work and don't forget that the ignore list is yer pal..
You could always just not go into Rickenbacker threads if it annoys you so much.
Are you also going to start keeping track of how many times I mention "4004"?

It addresses every complaint people have about the traditional 4003.There is no irony. This is a RIC thread & I was posting about what I consider a better RIC alternative to the 4003.
People really should learn how to respect other people's opinions.
That's all I've got to say about that.
(in my Forrest Gump voice)
Back in 1976 I had a 4001, I had to install a toggle switch to bypass the bass cut cap.
By the way, back then the Ric's were damn heavy, and were unbalanced, head stock heavy, are they still like that ????
