It depends on what tone you're talking about. The 4004 and 4003 are different, but still related tonally in a way that, say, a P and a J aren't. And why you would discount a bass because it varies from another bass by the same company eludes me.
Pickup location has varied slightly on both 4001/3 and 4004 models. The tones aren't identical, but again, they are related.
Never had the chance to play one ... in Italy they're rare but sooner or later I may buy a ysed one blindly eh eh
KBD comes into EVERY THREAD about 4003s and starts this.
Neither did the 4003 for twenty years.
For my main tone, I don't use the high-pass filter on my 4001 and 4003.
I'm sure if I swapped hi gains or toaster+horseshoe into a 4004 it'd sound like what I want to get out of a Ric. Those humbuckers (while not without their own merits) are detrimental to that clangy, piano-with-buzz thing I'm going for when I reach for my 4003.
Indeed it is. Moreover, the title of this thread would suggest OP has little experience with the brand and thus might well benefit from your heads up about the existence of another model.

This is a 1989 4003s5 ... the "binding" is actually tape

The 4004 actually has a broader timbre...

Pro job on the tape binding, certainly would not have guessed from the photos.
My '79 is well-balanced. Balance or neck dive has never been an issue.
I can remember when it was new and it took me a few weeks to get used to it, but once I did, it's been comfortable ever since.
I've never felt any need to weigh it - although its probably heavier than most bolt-on models.

It addresses every complaint people have about the traditional 4003.
I mean, I don't own one, sure, because a lot of the complaints people have about the 4003 aren't issues for me. But every complaint about Rickenbackers I see on here is something that has been addressed with the 4004.
I've owned a lot of Rics as old as 1972, both 4001's and 4003's and never had one that was unbalanced, my 79 4001 weighs a fair amount though but it sounds great and it's not too too heavy, I only notice it when I first pick it up, I bypassed the cap in that one, just soldered a little wire around the cap.
