Played an AmPro II Precision today

Any idea who’s strings those are? Felt and sounded like GHS flats?

Could have been Dunlops. They have black silks.

La Bella 760FS (45-105) = black silk only at the tuner end with gold ball ends.

Dunlop Flats = black silk at both ends with multi-color ball ends (gold/silver/black).

Definitely not GHS as they have purple silk.

Maybe. Figured they could be rebranded and be anything
I’ll probably try to see if I can test drive another one in a different store before I dismiss it.

I found my Pro II seems to work best with Hi Beams or Dunlop Super Bright Nickels. Naturally that will vary for everyone. I’m also playing it through ToneHammer/Bergantino rig. I had a Rumble and it made every bass sound mediocre to me. I think their sweet spot seems to be around the 300 or 500.

Also I agree with @michael_t on the strings. I will add that when I got mine the stock Fender strings were dead and sounded horrible. I figured a string change would bring the bass to life as I liked the ergonomics, weight and general feel. I was right.

Definitely try another one and if it doesn’t speak to you move on and get something you really like. Life is too short to make a bass work for you when it clearly wasn’t meant to be.

Cheers!

2021 model year, wearing some black silked flats, through a Rumble 100 (biggest amp they had)

came away feel very unimpressed

What am I missing here? I’ve had other P basses, but this one won’t be one of them
It's the pickups, at least for me...the bass is perfect except the pickups sound bad, luckily that's the easiest thing to change besides strings

Pretty much all my Ps are vintage spec then I got an AmProII and love it. Just a different flavor all around but in a good way. So much I got a second. Definitely, for lack of a better word...more techy in feel and tone compared to vintage specs. Still very useful, but hey, things would get boring with only 1 Crayola in the box. Maybe try another.

What was it that didn't impress you? 1) The Tone, 2) the Fit and Finish, 3) the Feel (Neck profile just didn't fit your hand).
1) tone seemed to lack character. Kind of flat and lifeless. Hard to say about the amp, the Rumble combos were all they had, and the 100w was the largest. Would have plugged it into several other amps, just for test giggles

2) There were some f/f issues: slight neck gap, some fret sprout (6000’ feet and single digit humidity. I am good at filing fret ends)
The neck was super yellow in a weird lego man color kind of way

3) no issue with the feel of the neck.

I did look up on Fender’s site. The bass specs the NPS rounds. So some has changed them

I'm curious now, not that it's a big deal but what color was it? I only ask after the Lego man yellow comment. It does look a little forced on my Miami blue one, but man, it's just right on my black one. Not Skwire Cheeto yellow but it is yellow on them. Got me curious.
This one here in Olympic white
Ironically that is the color of the last 2 American P basses I owned
