I am into old cars and motorcycles as well, so I have seen this same argument hashed and rehashed for over 20 years. The subject matter may be different, but the arguments and reasons are constant. .. and no matter what we THINK should be done with classics, it still falls to the owners to do with therm as they wish. Usually I look at mods with an eye for the craftsmanship. The mods or even the guitar itself may not be something I like, but I appreciate the work (providing it was done well). Mods are not usually done in a shop with the machines to mass produce guitars. They are done one at a time and by hand. They are often an expression of the individual. I am going to support the guy doing the actual work.
as for the image... unfortunately I have to agree. Image is always a marketing tool. If the music is good, and the band is memorable, people will go watch them. Sometimes a gimmick works.
