Playing a fourth down/up a string

(It's how I play that riff.)

Due to my "laziness," I place all my four (left hand fingers) on the A string and play the note D with my Pinky.
My left hand Ring finger is, kind of, glued to the Pink finger.

Now, I slightly move up my "two-finger" combination - The Ring and the Pinky (kind of, "pivoting" on the Index finger on the note C (A string) and play the A note with the Pinky (while my Ring finger is "attached" to the Pinky.
My left hand Index finger is tightly muting the A string - no sound on that string while playing the note A on the E string.
And my resting/pivoting left hand Index finger is ready to play C, followed by the Middle finger playing C#.

My Right hand is "raking" those D and A notes.
For that purpose, I us my Ring finger.

Just to be sure- you're using a tiny finger jump here? Cause it' looks like you're not doing a finger roll. Does it work fine with the song's tempo and articulation?

Just one question to that, as I'm trying different techniques outlined here: If you use finger 3, would you roll it or jump, or...?

With this particular situation, sort of a little bounce that borders on both seems to be the best choice for me.

The correct answer for you could depend on the string spacing and setup of your bass, as well as you physiology. IMHO experiment to see what works best for you with this particular tempo and sequence of notes.

That's a spot where you can do a classic DB-type "fork" using 4-5, 3-4, or 1-2, but I think DBers actually don't use 4-5 much, whereas EB players do it all the time.

How many fingers do you have? I don't usually include the thumb on the left hand...

Would you rake or alternate the A and E strings? Joe seems to be playing staccato here if that matters.

I think you’re over thinking this. I’d play it all on the A string. This is how it sounds like Joe is playing it

If you look at one of the answers in this thread, there is a video which proves otherwise.

I do realize I could play it on the A string, but getting all the answers here will be useful for other songs I'm working on, where you can't utilize an open string like that.

N.B. Please be advised that my right hand is holding the iPhone and my right hand is taking pictures. It could slightly affect my left hand position!

Now, I would say that I'm doing that "finger roll" - to be precise, a "two-finger" roll, the Ring and Pinky "joint venture."
(I use all my fingers but depending on the particular bass-line, my Ring and Pinky fingers tend to stick together.
My left hand index finger stays on the note C (A-string.)
Let's try to play an exercise (the way I do it frequently.)
Place your Index on the C note (A string) and rhythmically play that riff starting with C on the G string, followed by G on the D string, followed by C and C# on the A string.
Repeat the same rhythmic "frame" just starting on with G on the D string, followed by D on the A string, followed by the regular C and C# movement on the A string.
Now, play the same riff but starting on the D note (A string.)

You can also, exercise that riff by moving up and down the fretboard.

I don't want to argue with you. Maybe, you are correct, but...

But, Joe's Pinky looks so uncomfortable, "hanging on the side."
