I've mostly seen issues with the finishes on Ricks, but I've never seen bad fretwork on one, and chrome doesn't tarnish.

That's fine for you but not for me. If you think it's acceptable that's on you but I expect a new instrument to be new. Crazy I know but I refuse to spend the money I work hard to make on a new blemished instrument. Weather it be a cheap pos or a high end bass. Would you pay full price for a brand new car with scratched paint? If so you are the idiot. Idiot. If we are to take OPs words at face value; we must feel sorry for him; because he's obviously an idiot. To pass on a musical instrument that (approx. quote) "plays great and sounds even better" because of minor binding issues; is stupid. Binding bleed is acceptable. Go look at Custom Shop Les Pauls post 2013; the best CS Les Pauls "ever", is the consensus , and binding bleed is the inevitable consequence of the dye and finish being historically correct and desirable. I have 3 CS LPs; and the best of the bunch is my 2013, which happen to have binding bleed. I will never sell that guitar.
It's more than twice the price of a Rickenbacker. And it's input from players that has moved Gibson Custom in going in the historically accurate direction. It's about making musical instruments, not ornaments. The OP is thinking and acting like a child, an ignorant child IMO.
I don't, and do not want to, own a Rickenbacker. They're not to my taste. But; if my desire was the distinctive Rick tone; I wouldn't let a irrelevant superficiality stand in the way of fulfilling my desire.
Why would you try a new one instead of an '85, for example?
Why would you base anything on trying simply one bass?
Sweet I'm sure you will love it. As long as you are not as picky as I am. Even then I'm sure you can find one that's perfect. I'm just worried as I said in the OP if they miss something that obvious on the outside of the guitar what did they miss inside. This thread actually inspired me to just pull the trigger on one.

Legit concerns. Frankly I'm dismayed by the name calling you've received.Sweet I'm sure you will love it. As long as you are not as picky as I am. Even then I'm sure you can find one that's perfect. I hear you. And to be honest after that bad taste left my mouth I played a couple more and I'm still considering getting one. It just disappointed the hell pit of me when I grabbed it off the wall sat down and the blemish was the first thing I saw. It was right on top where I would see it every time I played and that really jacks with my obsessive nature. Every time I've ever banged a bass against something and it left a mark of makes me physically ill. If there would have been another to try at the shop I may not have overreacted the way I did. I am very addiment about keeping all my stuff pristine.
But then again what are internet forums good for if not overreacting to small insignificant stuff like that lol.
You sure change your mind quickly now, don't you? And I thought you hated Ricks? Hated them! And "small insignificant stuff", wait! does that mean you agree with me about defining binding bleed as a "minor issue"? And you called me the idiot; twice!Or are you bipolar on top of your OCD? (That's a joke; don't get angry now, m'kay?)
