Does anyone have experience playing Indie music on the upright bass (like Faye Webster, Big Thief, Angel Olsen, Eliott Smith, etc. kind of vibe)? I have been trying to decide if it makes more sense to try to play the type of music I like on upright or just play electric instead. I mainly see people using electric to play the type of music I want to play but personally love the feel and sound of upright (and don't know how to play electric). Another issue I've noticed is that in a lot of the music I listen to, they are also just playing the root note which doesn't seem that fun to me and feels a bit discouraging. The guitar/singing always seems to be the main focus with the bass barely noticeable or extremely simple baselines. I would greatly appreciate any advice. Sometimes I worry that I picked the wrong instrument because it's difficult to even find music written for the stuff I like (lol). Please convince me otherwise.
If you do play indie music on the upright, do you make up your own baselines/improvise or use transcription or tabs to try to figure it out? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!! My ultimate goal is to be able to casually jam with other people but not just play root notes.
