playing sick

...kinda thought he was exaggerating how sick he was...

So goddxxmned typical. Was in a band a long time ago, where the lead singer (without fail) came down with a sore throat before every show. Acted as if she was on deaths' doorstep all day, nails the show, parties afterward, and basks in the glow of all the people saying how amazed they were that she made it through.

(this, in no way is a slight against women...but is absolutely a slight against egomaniac/hypochondriac lead singers)

Hospitalization is the only thing that makes cancelling a gig an option IMO. I just did a gig last week with a fever, although not too bad at 101. This was a super-quiet restaurant gig with a piano/bass/sax trio, and the piano player could have played left-hand bass no problem. I still didn't cancel.

I agree. I've gigged with a 102* fever, horrible strep, asthma so bad I couldn't move my own rig, mangled fingers on either hand(working on cars) and on the night of having surgery for a torn rotator cuff & torn bicep tendon in the same surgery. I'm not saying I played well, but I made it.

I have never had to play a gig where I was really sick, just some coughs and aches. However, my last gig a little over a week ago had its own problems.
I had to drive through a major snow storm. I had to work up in Green Bay, I teach computer classes. It was a night class, I ended the class early on last Friday night at 9:30. I had to be back for a gig in Milwaukee at Midnight. Well, after I end class, I have to go back the motel, get my stuff and check out. The drive is roughly 100 miles. In good weather this isnt a problem, but on that night some areas got close to a foot of snow.
I made it to the show by 12:30. I saw at least 8 cars off the road on my way back to Milwaukee, but I made it.
As I walk in, my band was in the middle of trying to show one of the opening bands players the basic structure of our songs. They didnt think I was going to make it through the storm to the show. I almost didnt, I was very very close to pulling over, it was terrible out there.

I played with a band a few years back that 2 days earlier the whole band was in a car accident and they STILL came and played , without their usual bassist because he was still in the hospital.

So unless I am in the hospital I have no excuse EVER to cancel short of my vehicle bursting into flames on the way there and I can't save my gear in time.

one of the few times i've cancelled shows was when we had a couple of shows booked for NE Ohio a few weeks ago on the same day as the ginormous ice storm/blizzard pretty much ground everything to a halt here in the midwest(we're in Lafayette, IN). so i didn't really feel like killing myself, the rest of my band, our singers
young son(who always travels with us)and wrecking my new van attempting an 8 hour+ drive(and that's in nice, sunny weather) from north central Indiana to north eastern Ohio for a couple of basement shows.
but between myself and shawn(who i've been in other bands with previously) combined, there's almost been no show where one of us HASN'T been sick in one way or another :D
:bassist:

Here's a story a posted I long time ago:

This is a story of from a band I was in called Smokin Tweed. We were playing once in Breckenridge Colorado, during their pub crawl on Saint Patty's day. The bar we were playing in was the last bar on the pub crawl, so needless to say, we had a bunch of blitzed people.
We got a free meal that day, and i got some nasty nachos that disagreed with me. During the middle of a set, I felt a rumbling in my bowels. I tried to hold, but couldn't. I was getting sick. I looked at the guitar player, put my bass down and went toward the bathroom. The men's room was occupied, so I went into the ladies room and dropped a load like nobody's business. I was in there for a while, and I heard some girls pounding on the door saying "This is the ladies room!" I didn't care I had important business to do. However, I did feel sorry for the gal that came in after me (the bathroom had no windows or ventilation :D ).
After I was done, I walked out and got back on stage midsong. I was wiped and I had to sit on a stool to finish the tune. The crowd cheered me as a got back on stage. I guess the guitar player told them I was partying to hard (much nicer thing to say, than I got sick on the food and had to take a dump). The crowd tought I was puking in the bathroom and they were cheering me on for getting back on stage and playing.

I can remember two instances where I've played shows when I should have been home in bed.

1. Back in 2001 I got food poisoning from some fast food place the night before the show. I spent the whole next day taking pepto and advil and hitting the can every hour on the hour. Amazingly I made it through the show without incident, but spent about a half hour in the can after the show throwing up and S*&ting my a$$ off. The show was a success, too bad I couldnt enjoy it, but everyone else had a good time.

2. Last winter (2003-2004) I got the real bad flu that everyone had and spent 2 days in bed with a 103 fever. on the 3rd day I was down to 100 and drove to Reno from Sac (3 hours) to play a show. It was about 10 degrees in Reno that night. Show was off da hook and my guitar player was nice enough to drive me home. I was spent.

The show must go on!!!!

About a year and a half ago I had a regular every week gig at a spot in Norman Oklahoma (read OU). I had been sick with something or other for about three weeks or so. Nothing terrible, but I had a horrendous cough. The place we were playing was high volume. About half way through the first set I leaned back while reaching for the upper range on my bass and heard/felt these tremendous pops in my chest. Hurt like crazy. Was a little more, shall we say calm after that. Everyone kept coming up to me and asking what was wrong. Felt like I was suddenly eighty. Could not move more than an old fogie shuffle without wincing in pain (I normally jump around like a jerry's kid hopped up on pixie sticks). Later that night I had to make the others in that band load up my rig, follow me home, and unload it for me. Fast forward to doctors office the next day. Evidently all that coughing and jumping around with my bass (approx. 35 or so lb. behemoth) had weakened my rib cage. That loud pop had been three of my ribs seperating from the cartilage. At least I got out of moving my rig for a couple of months. :D

I have played with a broken pinky before... used the sling thing as a slide that worked good... however I was onced replaced because my arthritis in my wrists flared up alot, not my choice but my band told me to take a break (they didn't kick me out) and gave me full props during the show, and wished me well to get grooving again.

I won't miss a show for personal injuries, unless it was IMPOSSIBLE to play bass. Now family emergencies ect. that comes first.

All I need is a band now

Is it wrong that I have a gig scheduled for the night before my wedding?

I am now getting married on a Sunday.

Honestly, I don't see the harm, it's better than letting my brother order a stripper right......um.

thoughts?
cuz she's pissed

I'd go fpr the stripper personally, but you are right, in her eyes... it should be better.

A bachelor jam... what else would a bassist want?

Maybe he can send a stripper to your gig.
