playing sick

Is it wrong that I have a gig scheduled for the night before my wedding?

Yes, it's wrong.

cuz she's pissed

If she's upset that you're playing the night before your wedding, what is your reasoning for doing the gig anyway? Just my opinion, but starting your married life off by being insensitive to her wishes, especially when they are reasonable, isn't a very good idea.

fatdawg - if you are telling her it's a Gig, then I could understand that she's pissed. You're working the night before the wedding when (in her mind) you should be at home, in bed, preparing for what should be the biggest day of your life.

HOWEVER, a bachelor party is a bachelor party. Tell her it's a bachelor party, and that playing a show is so much better and more wholesome than getting lapdances, doing body shots, standing through a limo moonroof, puking your guts out while trying to tame three bisexual hookers, ending up at 7 in the morning face-down in an open sewer beside a Tijuana Donkey-show club.

I played a (surprise) gig for my bachelor party, and yes, it was way better than any donkey show.

I'd just say be reasonable with yourself. By all means do the gig but be sensible, remember it'll be one of the best days of your life the day after.
Best wishes.

Dude, don't be an ass to your future wife.

She'll be all emotional as it is. Support her. You may not think your wedding day is a big deal, but if she's female, she does--girls think about that day their WHOLE LIVES. I can't believe you even have to take a poll on how to be a gentleman to the woman you're going to marry.

Be a man and do whatever the hell she asks.

so i too have played gigs sick as a dog. i've only ever missed a gig once:

i was still in high school and in the morning before class i suddenly got this terrible pain in my chest. all day is was killing me and of course my friends are giving me the old "toughen up and be a man" deal :p

fast forward to that night we had the gig. we're in the back warming up--i'm against the wall and (as my bandmates told me) GREEN in the face--mind you, i'm dark skinned ;) and on top of everything i'm having a great deal of difficulty breathing. the EMS ends up being called and can't figure out whats wrong with me. since i was only 16 at the time i had to go with them to the hospital, 5 minutes beofre we're supposed to take stage. ends up my lung spontaneiously collapsed. the band went on without me.

actually the same thing happend about a month ago, same lung and i had to get surgery this time. i didn't miss a gig with this one, only a final exam :hmm:

I hear you. But you know what I'm saying. You gotta be supportive of a soon-to-be bride. It's just what you do.

I am far from being unsupportive. She and I have been together for 11 years this August. I started dating her in High School, while I understand and agree that this is one of the biggest days in my life( will eventually subside to the birth of my kids...at least I hope), I don't drink--so no parties, I don't enjoy bars unless I am gigging or seeing a gig, and I rarely do anything without her around me ever. This gig is not just some rink-a-dink thing it was booked last July two months prior to us setting the date of the wedding, besides that we scheduled the wedding for a Sunday because she didn't want to interfere with that arrangement. I tried do convince her at the time on several other dates, she had her reasons for the NO, and now she wants to be mad because I will be downtown in Chicago while she is with her sister in Millwaukee. Honestly, I think that she is thinking that I am lying and this is becoming some sort of bachelor schindig.
By pissed off, well....I should probably say irritated because I think she is allowing this to become things in her mind that scare her.

Whatever, I am not trying to say that anything is more important to me than our marriage, however, I get to play for three separate acts that night that could land me the best paying gig of my time. I feel trapped here and now I feel as though some of you(DR.) are trashing me.

Hmm. Well, that's all NEW information that you might have considered providing everyone at the START of this discussion. A couple of thoughts:

1. Don't share your personal life to the world if you can't deal with people having opinions that don't match nicely with yours.

2. If you're feeling "under pressure" it's from your own conscience, not anyone else.

I agree Phunky, you just gave a whole bunch of new info. The key piece being that the gig was set before the date, and she picked the day after the gig, knowing full well that you had the gig the night before. In this case, then she should understand that she picked the date and live with the situation.

+1

With the complete story, I now reverse my position. Sorry for the rush to judgement.

I'll call out if I'm really sick. That is if I'm running a high fever, can barely stand, and/or my head is in such a funk that I can't think straight.

I agree that the show must go on, but it can go on with a sub. Which is somewhat ironic in my situation because I am usually a sub.

I've played a few shows sick...it's never a fun experiance and your stage presence goes way down but hey...it gets me out of bed for a few hours and lets me do something I love.

I've also done the whole playing with broken fingers bit. I coach wrestling and at a gig last year, I was playing with 3 broken fingers one of my wrestlers decided to give me. DEFINATELY not the most fun I ever had.

I had a broken right hand back in 1992 and had to play some gigs. I wound up cutting away part of the cast around fingers 1 & 2 so that I could use them more efficiently.
