Please critique this slap tone

From what I can see of them, they look a lot like Jerzy pickups, which are also split-coils. Did your friend model them after those specifically?

Regarding construction, resistance and inductance? No, these are a project he started a good 5 years ago from scratch. More than 80 or 90 prototypes until he achieved something he actually likes.

The pickup covers do resemble Jerzy's...

Here's some better pictures of the bass I'm playing on the first clip:

Mine will have "Jacarandá da Bahia" (Brazilian rosewood) as top and fretboard, since he lives right in Bahia and can still get some good Dalbergia Nigra from local sources. It's going to look like this one, but not single-cut.

i dont think it sounds anything like a 70's jazz. it reminds me of my fodera with duals split to singles. kinda sounded like a fender. i then realized i was better off just sticking with fender'esque instruments rather than expecting it out of a 24 fret neck through humbucker equipped bass.

Agreed.

If the clip is the sound the OP's after, cool.

does every single person in this universe have to slap in a demo of any bass? Nothing to do with this, considering it's slap critique...just annoying

Uh, if it has nothing to do with this thread, why post? This thread is specifically about slapping so you're in the wrong place to complain.

To me it sounds somewhere in between a 60s jazz and a bass with humbuckers in similar positions. Not very Marcus at all, which I like. I figure it's got more beef to it than what you can hear through the camera mic but not quite as sharp sounding as a jazz with stainless steels. I dig it a lot more than I usually dig basses with humbuckers, as far as slap tone goes.

sounds good to me, but you would know better being there. I do think the little bit played on the B string sounded WAY different from the rest of the bass. (real farty and unarticulated) however, that could just be the loss in recording and playback.

I thought they were Jerzy pickups too. Looks like this luthier copies many successful designs. For my money, I'd rather have something original or fitted to me. Otherwise, I'd save up and buy one of from the builders he's influenced by.

Nice playing and even better gameface :)
best of luck with your new bass

Alex, you sound great... the bass sounds OK

Understand critique is of audio from a video camera mic

that bass sounds a little brittle and with nothing warm coming from it. Marcus has that lots of snap but the snap is supported by warmth in the bottom. I do not hear that on this clip.

The wood and workmanship look top notch... beautiful bass

I might be critiquing the sound of your video camera, but I would want to hear something chubbier on the bottom to go with that snap. FWIW

Thank you for your comments. Yes, being recorded from a camera mic really changes the tone. It has a bunch of lows there and I even cut them a little bit being afraid that it would sound distorted. I'll try to record this same bass or something similar through a different equipment.

I am very particular about the type of slap tone I like. Here is a link to a slap tone that fits the bill for me. Invalid Link Removed
The slap tone in your clip is on the brighter side. I prefer a slap tone with more "Beef" to it.

I particularly like this. Perhaps it's that it's very similar to some of my technique in that it's "gentle" and the percussion of the thumb is not overwhelming the piece. To ME that's important.
I never understood why some folks smacked the strings So damn hard; if you need volume, turn up the amp. If you need more "ring", stay on top of the fret.
I enjoyed it.
