It was 89.99 for dual installation of pickups. 49.99 for one. I will be buying a iron for my future projects though.

Woa! That's like half the pickup price. Yeah, I think I'm gonna do my own. I was asking, cause I'm thinking of poppin a US made split and a big single in my talman, then putting the overseas Nordys in my old Gio. Yeah, I think I'm gonna do it myself. Screw that.

For the record I liked this post because you're gonna get a soldering iron, not because of what GC charges for what should be 20 min work tops for a decent tech

Perfect reason you should learn to do it yourself. And while you're in there shield and ground it proper and it will be dead quiet. You could do all that yourself for much less than they're charging you just drop in a new pickup.

My Classic 50's Lacquer Precision is sooooo quiet. I grounded it so that the cavity, pickguard, covers, and even the two screws for the thumb rest are grounded.

I am getting a p bass worked on at guitar center, primarily, new pickup installed. I am getting a quarter pounder p bass pickup installed. However, they are charging me for a dual pickup install... Why?...

Because a lot of people don't ask questions and just pay the bill.

Remove four long wood screws. Unsolder the two wires from the volume pot.

Replace with new pickup by reversing those two steps. Twenty minutes is fairly generous.

The OP had one pickup replaced. The same number of screws is used for either one J or one split P pickup: four. Regardless of how expensive the work is, or the number of turns the screwdriver has to make in order for the job to be completed (assuming they adjusted the height correctly), or the complexity of the ganglia of wires in the control cavity; the logic, or lack thereof remains constant.

Well, technically it is one pickup, but in reality they would have to drill out two cavities due to the design of the P pickup.

No, it's one cavity. Doesn't matter what shape it is. A router template is used rout the cavity. Nothing is "drilled out".

People used to call the shop and asked if I ate yet, a pack of Camel Lights, some kind of Lager, and possibly weed + $20.
It was the going rate to install something less than a full Strat setup or 2x humbuckers to a 4-pot Gibson layout.

Turnaround was quick, you hung out with the customer, owner didn't care bc they never paid us much.

Those were the good ol days when I'd get hungry and hope someone needed a restring or pots/pickups/preamp that day.

I'm just going say, even if it gets me into trouble with the "mods", 4 screws shouldn't mean a DANG THING. It's a p-bass, it's the easiest install there is.

THERE IS NO WAY GC DOESN'T KNOW THIS and capitalize on this. Sorry to shout, probably another mod telling me how bad I am, but FFS, it's a p-bass. Most simplistic change out EVER.

A jazz bass is NOT as simple. Oh, I can do, but it's not the same.
