i need a new head. i want it to be at least 350-400 watts. my price range is around 400 dollars used. anyone have any suggestions on whats good for that price? it would be used to play punk/hardcore music mostly so i want to make sure it will be loud enough. please give me your opinion on what you like and why or whats out there please.

I personally DO NOT like to buy used amps. I've had bad luck in that department. If your limit is around $400, why not buy this sucker:

There are PLENTY of good reviews about the BX1200 (one of which is very fresh and currently active). The BX600 is half of that. How can you go wrong? Don't like it? send it back no questions asked.

I haven't played through one, but I've heard consistently good things about Carvin heads.
I've tried Nemesis heads in the store and they've always sounded pretty good and seemed to provide plenty of power. There's a Nemesis NA650 (275 watts@8ohms, 440 watts@4 ohms, 650 watts@2 ohms) for sale right now in the TB classifieds: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=460274.
I mix and match different cabs for different venues all the time, so I personally find the ability to operate at 2 ohms to be a significant benefit.

+1 Carvin is a great route to USA-made high wattage for low $$. Look to the TB classifieds for deals on used, too.
Today and tomorrow on Link Removed and Invalid Link Removed "Back to School" sales - new MarkBass and Genz-Benz micro amps - new - close to your price range.
I have a Yamaha BBT500H head that when new cost me under 400€. It requires two 4 ohm cabs to get the most effect (500W) out of it though.
You should be able to find one of those pretty cheap. Mine has never failed me, but I wish it had less sound shaping possibilities. It also has an audible hiss said to come from the class D power amp when using it with an active bass and the tweeters are on. It's not on the line out.
The three best features in it are IMO:
1. Light, only 5kg
2. It's a good sounding amp despite the hiss (I don't use the tweeter so the hiss is no problem for me)
3. The price.
The three worst features:
1. Too much sound shaping possibilities. You get lost easily.
2. Headroom with 4 ohm load. With 2 ohms it has always been enough for me.
3. The hiss.
A fellow TB'er sold his because it got too hot acording to him. Mine also gets rather warm, but as it has never failed me even though I often push it pretty close its limits, I have ignored the heat it generates.
