Please HELP ID'ing strings!

Is there a DR set in that gauge maybe?

DR's "long scale" is 37.75" in winding length (ball end to taper), so it was ruled out based on 37" on the ones in question.

Just a thought - as the bass came from South Korea, where Moollon is from, maybe they're stock strings of some sort? I looked at their European FB page and while recent basses have silks of various colors, most of those from around 2020 and earlier do not. Perhaps worth asking them what was used as stock then (?)

First, THANK YOU in advance for your time and expertise in figuring out what the heck these strings are....

I picked up a Moollon JV a couple of years ago. It came with a lighter gauge set of strings on it. I've ha a La Bella endorsement forever. So, once I received the bass I put my normal go to strings on it. And it lost some of the magic. Put the original (to me) strings back on it and BOOM there it was again. Have run this same scenario with at least 4-5 different brands of strings. Every time the original strings win out. It's a good bass w/ any other string on it. But a great bass with the original (to me) strings. If I had to guess I would say they are nickel.

I reached out to the person I bought it from. They said they got the bass from some one in S. Korea and they had no idea what was on it. So, no help there.

There is no silk wrap at the nut end of the string. Standard brass ball ends at the bridge end of the string. The low B has no taper. I may be wrong but when I enlarge a pic of the string it looks like it could be a "coated" string IE: Elixir But I have zero experience with Elixirs.

Looking for any help as to what these great strings (at least on this bass) are.

If anyone can figure it out, it's this community.

That measurement is correct. Regular DR long scale sets are JUST long enough at 37.75" that I can use them on a 5 string multiscale with 36" B string.

Just wondering... Would it be possible they're in fact DR but custom-wound as factory strings for Moollon? Just like Ken Smith strings are made by GHS but to Ken Smith's specs with different winding lengths, etc.?

I’d be surprised if YJ would use a coated string. But who knows. Here we are.

Dragon Skins are Hi Beams (stainless steel roundwound on a round core) with clear coating.

All the TI strings I’ve used have silks… jazz rounds have green jazz flats red…

they do make another round wound though…
DR pure blues don’t have a tapered wind and neither do slinkies…

They're definitely not Thomastiks. All three types of Thomastik electric bass roundwounds (Powerbass, Infeld Superalloy and Jazz Rounds) have silks.

That seems to be correct but like others have already said, DRs have longer winding length so based on your measurements your strings can't be DRs.

That would be a big no. Im 56yrs old. Have played in 63 countries. Have gone down the gear rabbit hole way further than I would care too admit. There is just a tonality that everything else is missing. An openness. Hard to put into words. The bass speaks with these strings.

I forgot to add, I had em scoped and the gauges are: 40, 60, 75, 100, 1.25 Lighter than the 45-1.28 Im used too. Have tried Curt Mangan, SIT and Ernie Balls in this guage.

I wouldn't trust those numbers 100%. If you measure a selection of known strings, fresh out of the box, I think you may be surprised by the measurements you end up with compared to the manufacturer's specs...

Still, they're probably around 40-125 rather than 45-130 but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that one or two strings are .005 off, meaning that .075 might actually be .080, which would probably give you far more potential candidates for your mystery strings (assuming they were purchased as a complete set rather than singles).

I hear ya. I know the gauges can be all over the place on fixed sets. But gotta start somewhere and it gives me a base to work from.

That last photo looks an awful lot like Elixir to me… the white coating between wraps makes me think you might have an older set of poly webs? That formula was more visible than the current nanowebs- this wrap seems more transparent to me.

I’ve got a set of strings on my Fretless - same story: they came on a bass and I can’t figure out what they are. But they look like the same taper length as these. And they’re also magic lol - there’s low end and harmonics and they’ve been taken off and reinstalled a few times… played 2 full shows this weekend on them and I want to get some replacements.

elixirs are going to be my next try… maybe after payday.
